the only elements i see around are by middle aged guys.
As are the Scions I see. A middle aged friend just got one because she can haul the kids and the stuff from CostCo around, yet it doesn't scream "Mom" like a minivan or an SUV does.
Yeah, they are Toyotas, but toyota is trying to appeal to the young hip market so they are dissociating themselves from the toyota name in this case, If you goto a toyota dealership there is a seperate Scion section, a specially hired and trained "hip" salesman, and little to now mention of toyota at all.
They got me with the Supra Twin turbo, and then decided to take it off the market because the American youth and 20's crowd likes to drive old-man cars. No Celica GT4 either, which is a damn shame.
I'm not familiar with the 2.4L engine in the Tc. Given some knowledge of the Japanese market, I bet it's a small truck motor. . . . which, incidentally, is perfect for a market that loves boring cars. More than anything, the Scions scream "I have no edge and no taste." At least with some of the new subarus it's only taste that you lack.
that is 100% correct. just look at the honda element for more evidence of this topic...
it is crashing and burning on its target audience of "young people." the only elements i see around are by middle aged guys.
what was toyota thinking...
Hmmm. I don't even pay any attention to that. I don't know how the little box would be targeting that sort of market. It looks like a sort of retro-European take on a small practical car.
I don't like the Element at all, though. It's too big, so it looks like a Land Rover knock-off. The Scion box works because it's a little guy.
As for the "no taste" comment, well, tastes vary. I like some "pretty" cars, like the TT, but I also like interesting or underdog cars, like the pug-nosed WRX (which sure isn't pretty) or the Scion xB. I wouldn't be caught dead in a sports car, though, no matter what the adrenaline rush is like when you hit the gas pedal. Bleah.

The WRX is not an underdog unless it's racing on a track with, say, an RX-7.
There are a lot of boring looking cars that are edgey as hell. Most of them come from Japan, but there are a few European types out there too. . .
Quick and tight, fairly uninspired looks: (and not too expensive)
Honda Prelude, Honda/Acura RSX type S, Mazda6 (not the cheap one), Subaru WRX, Subaru 2.5RS. . . so many to list.
I've test driven many of these cars.
The 2.5RS, by the way, is a great deal.
It will be interesting to see how these Scions feel. Are they for the American market only or what? If that's the case, I am going to guarantee that they suck.
All the Elements I see are driven by people my age or younger, because everybody my age or older thinks they are butt fugly (which they are).
Toyota has the right idea with the Scion. And what the heck is addabox talking about catalog Toyota parts not being hip? One acronym: TRD.
The Scion xB is butt fugly.
Sure, but is that what is on offer from the Scion division? My impression was they're offering a super long list of stuff like cheesy bolt-ons and subwoofers and "custom" interior parts. It's like "customizing" your cell phone with face plates and ring tones.
I guess the days when custom meant substantial body work and major engine and suspension modifications are long gone....
The WRX is not an underdog unless it's racing on a track with, say, an RX-7.
No, the WRX falls under the "interesting" header. A friend of mine has one, and it's a pure joy to drive.
I actually fell in love with Subarus after driving a Justy (of all things!). Why? Because the gas gauge had "0" for empty and "1" for full. I suppose that proves that I'm a completely unreconstructed geek, doesn't it?

They might not be drivers' cars - in fact, I'd be amazed if the xB fits that description - but I tend to look for other things. Like, say, whether I can stuff my drumset in, and maybe a guitar and a few amps and my big old self.

They're not drivers cars, which isn't wrong by any means, but it's a bad move for toyota if they want to sell to the hip market. The growing popularity of compact, sporty cars among young folks, as opposed to chunky SUVs, means that yound folks want drivers cars. Since hip is synonymous with young (let's not kid ourselves), cars for the hip market these days should echo the sporty-compact mold. That was my only point. The stuff about Americans being overweight, cupholder obsessed freaks was merely frustration.
I like the xA but a 1.5 liter four? Even with a high redline this car's performance isn't going to turn any heads. I also like the idea of a center mounted intrument cluster. It's almost Alpha-esque but it's too high on the dash. Again, good idea, poor execution. Price-wise this car looks hard to beat. And it's a Totota which means dependable. Toyota's are NEVER "edgy". It's just not in the chromosones.

Yes...at least according to a couple of Celica freaks I know.

Huh. I guess I'm a little alarmed at the idea that somebody can make that box thing go real fast.
