This whole story has a creepy downside (at least for me). I certainly remember how the prospect of the PPC 8500/G5 electrified the community back then much in the same way as today the rumored roadmaps featuring a 975/3.5Ghz to arrive this year, a dual core 976 next year and a Power6-based chip two years down the road.

I sincerely hope Apple can do _much_ better selling the machines as they did in the past, because else IBM is going to lose interest rather quickly.

Man, with the dawn of the new 64-bit G5 processor (with 48-bit memory addressing), the name should have been changed. I was seriously hoping they would get away from the G-names.

    The PPC 601 was G1, 603/604 was G2....all 32-bit.

When I heard that they were looking into calling the G5 the X1, it was even more exciting. That, in the story book way, not from a technical standpoint at all.

    HEH,

    walloo.
