Actually, a more relevant observation would be that you can't boot Win3.11 on an Athlon XP system with USB, FireWire, SATA, a Radeon9800, etc, etc.

Why? Because the drivers aren't there. Same thing. It isn't that Apple somehow *prevented the hardware* from booting into 9, it's simply that *9 doesn't know about the new hardware*.

    No conspiracy.

Development on OS 9 has simply stopped, as all software projects eventually do when replaced by a newer project.

Instead, Apple wrote the Classic layer, that offers a simple abstracted hardware interface for 9 to run on, but that can be mapped to the underlying OS X hardware model easily. So there's no need to continue to develop 9, when, essentially, the 'hardware' has been frozen in place. With the Next Big Thing in hardware, *maybe* we'll see a bump for 9, if indeed the NBT is completely incompatible with mapping to an existing 9 driver... but I doubt it.

Classic is an application that runs on OS X that provides a hardware abstraction layer for OS 9 to talk to. OS 9 is then 'booted' (ie, run) inside that environment to make it *think* it's running directly on hardware.

So no. You cannot run Classic without OS X any more than you could run Word v.X without OS X. It's just an application like any other.

Yes. First you start Classic. Then you open a Classic application. It's ALWAYS full screen, whenever you are in a Classic application. Notice that the menu bar changes. However, OS X still stays in the background.

EDIT: A question for you... if you were "bad at English" like you claim, then why do your grammatical errors consist of things like replacing "to" with "2"? Wouldn't you be misspelling things, or getting the word order wrong perhaps? Instead, you simply use weird shorthand. That doesn't indicate a lack of understanding of English, it just makes me think you're lazy about typing coherently.

Not that I know of when it comes to the Finder at least, no.

Can I ask why it's important to have 9 running on the current hardware, instead of running 9 applications inside X?

Do you just not like X that much?

Think of it this way- Classic is to OS 9 as Virtual PC is to Windows. Can you boot Windows on a Mac? I don't think so.

(Shhhh... don't make this any more involved than it needs to be. Next thing you know it'll be a war about emulation vs. mapping vs. interpreting, and then someone will mention Hitler.)

I honestly think this guy is trolling. Just an impression I've gotten from reading his threads/posts.

    *sigh*

If you run Classic apps inside Classic, you get the old toolbar.

But there's no way that I know of to force the OS 9 *FINDER* to run. So you're going to have to use the OS X Finder.

The Dock can be hidden with AppleMenu->Dock->Turn Hiding On.

Care to explain why it's so gosh darned important for you to think you're running OS9?

You're going to have to learn OS X if you want to continue using a Mac for your everyday stuff. Yeah, you can get by with OS 9, but in a few years I don't know what you'll do. Face facts, you will have to learn OS X sometime. Just tell your parents to never delete anything. If they want to create folders on the root level of their hard drive instead of using their Home folder, fine.
