There are no judges, just the members of the Academy, all the people in the audience for the show, plus a couple hundred more. Interpersonal politics is a major factor in who gets the awards, particularly the big six.
RotK: good movie, but personally i thought it wasn't much more amazing than any summer blockbuster i see. The dialogue doesnt sound as cheesey because they disguise it 'olde english'. To get by the slow parts they have epic battles but so did Attack of the Clones... Also the editing should not have won, just because they did alot of work doesnt mean they deserve an award, it still has to be well done.

You haven't read the books have you? The Olde English of the movies might as well been urban slang compared to tolkiens actual words. I think the dialogue is the best thing about the book series but had PJ focused on that the movies would not have connected with today's audience.
