it is no excuse but apple does something that dell/hp/sleinware/gateway don't, apple designs every element, mobo, proc(with help from moto/ibm), system controller, os, cases and so on:
pc makers have a factory pumping out cases and slap togetherr a bunch of off the shelf parts and a PoS os, XP HOME, thats why they can change parts constantly for nothing and sell the crap for like 300$
At the current time I think it is important to look more at IBM than Apple when considering announcements and enhancements. The G5 came out as a 130 nm chip, with the 90 nm moving into production around last December. That shift is going to feed the iMac and PB as soon as the prototypes are approved and parts are available for production.
When IBM is moving full speed on Apple's chips, including moving rapidly down their roadmap, I think you will be seeing more speed bumps than you have in years - and you'll probably join those that complain about announcements coming too fast. (How many single 1.8 G5 buyers yelled at full volume when the Dual 1.8 came out "too bloody fast"?) Get ready because IBM will be the driving force and Steve J will be taking all the power & speed he can get.
