Mind over matter people, it's really not that hard. You're all only tired in the morning 'cause you're lazy! Seriously though, just get up and go and quit complaining about it. Live your life while you got it. Sleepy is only a state of mind. Get over it.
People get into bad habits and have trouble breaking out of them. You don't need 8 hours of sleep a day, you want it. And really that's find, but at least admit it. I'd love to consistently get more rest, but I love even more doing a lot more.
Since school started in August, I've been getting 3-4 hours per night. It's not enough.
back on topic: I need some 'slow' time in the morning. Jumping out of the bed, showering and then rushing to the car is not my thing. I still have a habit from the old mailbox times where the cheapest phone calls were in the morning: I wake up at 6 am, make some coffee, browse some forums , dawdle away, then look on my watch, panic, shower and rush to my car. I typically leave home at 8:30 am and reach my office at 9:00 am. Thankfully at that time the worst rush hour is already over and I can zip through the traffic. I have a short distance of Autobahn on my route where I typically can accelerate up to 100 mph...
Hi GSpotter -
I do the same thing, minus the coffee - get up at 5:30, get involved with some threads or email, then suddenly realize it's late, dash downstairs and rush around. I hate that! So even when I'm up before the crack of dawn, I end up speeding to get to work on time.
I'm an admitted insomniac. I literally can't get to 'sleep' before the sun rises. I'll lie in bed all night giving my body a rest while my mind races, and then around 5AM or so the light will start creeping in and I'll crash...then wake up at 7 to get to the office by 8. Oddly, every couple weeks I'll feel physically tired (usually on a Friday) an crash hard for a full 8-10 hours. Then back to normal.

What I hate is leaving my lab at like 8 or 9 and having to get to class by 9 the next morning. It isn't the lack of sleep that kills me, its the whole feeling of lack of self time. Before I gained some sense, I used to shower for 2 hours because no one bothers you when you are in the shower... College got rid of that habit...
I'm a nightowl, too, but for most of my life I was blessed by not needing much sleep. I could go for months and months and months on 4 hours of sleep a night.
And then I turned 30, and you'd think my metabolism slammed into a brick wall.
Last semester, I taught at 7:00 am, which meant I woke up at 5:15. I would routinely go to bed at 1:00 am and then back up a few hours later to teach. But unlike my youth, I was completely exhausted by the end of the week, and I'd sleep 12-14 hours through most of the day on Saturday.
Now my body seems to want 8 good hours of sleep. In fact, I'll wake up automatically after 8 hours, which is really bizarre.
Two things get me through the night and morning: 1) Melatonin forces me to get sleep at a decent hour and 2) A 12-oz mocha wakes me up.
Hi Scott -
I don't know how I've managed to get by on 3 hrs. per night. I don't really get by on it, actually. I keep trying to get more sleep.
Does melatonin really work for you? I tried it, but it did nothing. Maybe I didn't take enough. How much do you take?
A half-dozen years ago, I'd drive straight through from Austin (TX) to Grand Haven (MI), party for a few days with little sleep, then drive straight back (about a 30 hour drive each way). Nowadays I think that sort of stunt would literally kill me.
It works perfectly for me. I take a pill about 11:00 or 11:30 every night, and about a half an hour later I'm fighting to keep my eyes open.
I should also admit that all of this coincides with my discovery (talk about bad habits being hard to break) that if I stay and work and, you know, GET STUFF DONE, I don't have to stay up late at home getting it done. So rather than jetting after my office hour is over, I stick around, grade a little, write a little, and sure enough, I'm consistently ahead of the curve on my grading.
Yeah, I had my angsty teenaged years... Was on a Rice kick for a couple of months, read everything she'd written up til that point (about the time Lasher came out, IIRC) Look up her Sleeping Beauty series for some more offbeat stuff.
I read the series through Tales of the Body Thief, which I seem to remember liking quite a bit. But then I stopped. Haven't read anything of hers since then. I didn't like Tom Cruise as Lestat, did you? I will check out the series you mentioned. I'll let you know what I think.
So, how did you like Utah? hahaha. Any polygamists at your company?
I guess Rice lives in a house full of weird stuff. I can see writing the books. But living surrounded by stuffed owls and god knows what all just sounds too creepy for words. Ick.

Have you ever been to Fricano's? I think that's how you spell it. Great place, full of fun memories. Oh, yes, doing that would probably kill you. I'm surprised it didn't when you were younger.

I'm so tired of not having 'self-time' that I'm thinking of applying for a year's leave. I've saved enough to support myself modestly for a year, and my job would be guaranteed when (if) I wanted to come back.
I'd like to quit teaching jr. high and teach jr. college instead. Or maybe I could write trashy novels - one every six weeks or so. I could travel and write. No need to stay in one spot to write a trashy novel.
And then I could try writing something with a bit of literary merit and see how that works out.
Not that this advice comes from my own experience, but you could write for the travel book companies... they are regularly updated... they often need people (i think)...
I have never been a morning person. Actually, I'm not a "waking up" person, I don't care what time of day it is. My kids find me a push over most of the day, but you don't mess Mom if you wake up at night. State your business and get back in bed, cuz she ain't gonna take no crpae. You know the Darth Vader line, "Don't make me destroy you"? Well that's me when I first wake up.
But then, waking up late doesn't I have to drive fast, since I'm about 15 seconds away from my office (depending on how quickly I shuffle down the hall). The only thing it screws up is how much time to I get to work full throttle before the kids wake up.
In fact, I slept in this morning and three of my four kids were up with me, before I had a chance to make my coffee. So I had the 18 month old b*tching for his breakfast, because he can't wait to eat (he's quite good size for his age); the 3 year old holding out his cup for juice, which still needs to be made; and the 7 year old bustling to and fro to make pancakes. I sent the 7 year old downstairs to get dressed to buy me some time, but boy is she fast. I barely had my coffee made before she returned and proceeded to crack eggs and start pouring things. Finally, I set her to making the juice with the 3 year old to help and slide a preliminary bowl of Cheerios before the 18 month.

Yes, you are correct. If I don't have anything to do for a day or so, I'll be up till at least 5:30 and probably sleep past noon.

So see, if I sleep in, it's to my own detriment.
