They're probably getting help from the Pepsi promotion too. "Hey, while I'm here, how about I BUY a couple of songs to go with my free one." Genius.
Well maybe. The Press Release says
music fans have purchased and downloaded over 50 million songs from Apple?s iTunes® Music Store, not including songs redeemed from the currently-running Pepsi iTunes promotion. The 50 millionth song, purchased last Thursday afternoon, was ?The Path of Thorns? by Sarah McLachlan.
Very impressive Apple. Even without the Pepsi promotion they're stomping on the competition.
Way to go Apple, but remember, Jobs set a goal of 100 million songs by April...unfortunately, it's not likely to happen. Just putting things in perspective...but props to Apple, Napster and Co. don't stand a chance.
The sad thing is, 100 million would be such an easy target to have hit if there had been an international launch. At this rate, by the end of April, Apple would have to hope for the 2.5 million per week downloading to continue, and combined with Pepsi, that promotion would have to account for 35 million songs out of the 100 million possibly redeemed number.
It doesnt look good for the 100 million target, unless iTunes launches for everyone else at the end of this month or the beginning of April.
Other than this minor miscalculation on Apple's part, it doesnt really matter. At this point Apple has dominated the download market, and nobody will catch up. Hitting the 100 million mark is just a matter of time, and it wont be much longer than the year goal. Once the International stores launch, downloads could reach like 5 million a week.

I think the 100,000,000 song goal was including the Pepsi songs. When Jobs announced that Apple wanted to sell 100 Million songs he followed it up by saying, "and we're going to give away 100 million songs".
Just for some perspective, Apple is selling as many songs in two weeks as Napster is in 5 months.
i think i will go buy some songs at iTMS to celebrate
509 songs and growing in my purchased music file..will add about a dozen more today...

Good lord Gelding!! May I suggest some Letterpress Opry?
Yes the 100mil by April includes the Pepsi promo so keep tipping those bottle and redeeming those songs. We need a high redemption rate. I'm going to buy some Sierra Mist tonight. I'm really finding some unique tracks so far in iTMS. Classical, Electronic, World and others. I'm enjoying it.
People get their free song or two, and head to the iTMS for the first time. When they get there they HAVE to put in their credit card info even to redeem the free songs. They choose what free song or two they want, and then say "Hey, they've got THIS song that I've been wanting too! I'll download it. It's only 99 cents, after all." Maybe they buy a couple more while they're there.
If 10 million people who redeem a free song only buy 1 other song, that's 10 million right there. CHA CHING!
Brilliant, I tell you. Brilliant. Apple's future is so bright... 8)
One of the cool things about the Pepsi promotion is that I've been a lot more experimental with the tracks I choose to download than I am with my own money. I've always wanted to hear some old Miles Davis and John Coltrane. I'm listening to Bitches Brew right now, thanks to Pepsi, I now have. And they tend to be 20 minute songs. Not a bad prize.
How typical of the BBC to knock Apple's announcement.
But the competition is laughable:

And just to repost my contribution to this subject from MDN.

If you assume that Track 50M was sold right at the end of Thursday, Apple still have 47 days to reach the 100M total.
If iPod mini sales stimulate 10% growth in standard downloads (to around 393K/day), Apple wll achieve 68.5M sales by April 28.
The PepsiCo promotion then needs to generate 32.5 million downloads by the end of April to reach 100 million: put another way, Pepsi drinkers need to redeem nearly 380,000 downloads/day (backdated since February 2).
If you further assume that there are 1M iPod users in the USA who might be on the lookout for winning caps, they each have to find/buy a winning cap every 3 days or so. So if you buy a bottle of Pepsi every day, you need a 1 in 3 chance, which is exactly what you've got (300 million bottles, 100 million winners).
I'm willing to lay money that Apple will only miss its target by around 2.5% - 5% if it misses at all, which I doubt. PepsiCo are not as stupid as some contributors seem to think; so I suspect the caps are out there, it's just you have to be real enthusiastic to get to them quickly.
I have posted all bar the last paragraph to zdnet.co.uk under their 'post talkback abuse', claiming that their original piece by Ina Friend was an abuse of the word "journalism".
The CNet originated article (picked up by dozens of other publications) saying Apple has not met it's goal of 100 million downloads is a bit premature. If we include the whole month of April then there should be 15 million more downloads. That would bring the total up to about 65 million. Pepsi says it should have an excellent response to its promotion, even though some bottlers haven't seemed to go along with it wholeheartedly, so another 35 million would not be out of the question. This totals up to 100 million if my addition is correct. Even if Apple misses the target set by SJ (one I'm sure his marketing people would NEVER have approved) so what? If additional iTMS stores had come on line by now - and people it is not Apple's fault, the 100 million figure would have been surpassed significantly in my opinion.
Don't blame the entire "media" for the article. Blame the wrtier Ina Fried for poor reporting.
if apple wants a realy huge spike in downloading, they need, when the number gets to 80 million, announce a contest, the 100millionth songs buyer gets a powermac, 20 inch display a 40gb ipod and 100$itms gift card
