Amendment sponsor Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings.

"What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."

Now, putting aside for the moment whether or not getting ones genitals (be you male or female) pierced is 'appropriate' (or whether this is something that the state should be able to decide) I'm a little shocked that this bill could have gone through without the existance of 'such a thing' having been brought to the attention of the legislature.

How sheltered and/or ignorant are the people making our laws anyway?

Man, sometimes I wonder about the states. Americans dont be too insulted, but u have to admit things get very anal down there sometimes. Is the US the most right wing free country in the world? Signs pointing to yes. How can a state govern what a person does to their body? You dont even own that anymore? 2 to 20 years for piercing your clitoris? On top of that, its a sexually biased law. It's so sad, the thought of the government telling you how to treat your body. Isn't sodomy still band in some states? How are gay men supposed to have sex then? You have to learn from the Europeans and mellow out!!

It's another one of those 'base assumptions' things.

If it is utterly incomprehensible to someone that one would ever *want* to do such a thing, then anyone who has done it *must* have been coerced into it, and it is therefore the state's interest to protect the 'victim'.

Which is so utterly bollixed in this case as to be rightfully laughable.

i think if you plotted where a lot of these issues occur on a map of the US, you'd see some patterns emerge.

i'm not sayin'... i'm just sayin'...

Sexist pigs. Why is it illegal for women but not for men? Next thing you know they'll be banning short skirts, two-piece swimwear, and thong underwear. F*ck them.

EDIT: I'm not saying I personally agree with genital piercing... I have no idea why anyone would want to get that done to them. But it shouldn't be illegal, at least not for an adult. And it DEFINITELY shouldn't be legal for one sex and illegal for the other.

It's not just a US thing though...this kind of stuff (bizarre legislation stemming from lawmakers making laws about things they know little or nothing about) goes on everywhere. The intent of this bill (that female genital mutilation be outlawed) is a good one as far as I am concerned. I have the utmost respect for different cultures and values, but there are certain things that I just don't accept as necessary for any culture. Some uptight asshole obviously tacked on 'piercing' for personal reasons (although I suppose it could also have been some ignorant individual with a half-understanding of what genital piercing is), and the rest of the legislature put the bill through either because they didn't examine it closely enough or they didn't know that 'such a thing' existed.

I suppose nobody ever claimed that democracy is not a flawed system...

    UGH I HATE THIS COUNTRY

Ya know, this still has to be approved by the governor. Maybe he won't be a numbskull.

Then again this guy is the governor of Georgia. He looks like a used car salesman.

Does this guy really believe it is his job to decide what private people choose for themselves?

Like some others have said here I too have no need for any piercings of any sort but for those out there who desire them who are any of us to act against them?

it isnt democracy when the people at the top are making the decisions based on their beliefs instead of average person in that country. for example, bush trying to ban gay marriage because it's "not christian". i didnt realize that the us was comprised only of christians. and on that, most arent strict to the bible. he should learn a lesson from our ex-pm jean chretien who said, "i personally dont believe in gay marriage but its what the people want". thats democracy.

There's an obvious joke there, but I'm too nice to point it out.

I'm personally involved in trying to get some tax incentives passed and then I read this stuff. Great that these folks are really worried about the needs of the state. It's like, why am I spending all this effort to convince these people of the merits of OUR bill when I see stuff like this float through. At least this piercings bill doesn't look as if it's gone to the Senate yet.

Are the dancers at the strip clubs going to be renegades now???

Will the Senators phone in to report these infractions when they see them?

Well, drewprops, it's nice to see your state gummint working effectively...

    And why only women?

If mutilation of a baby's genitals is wrong, even if for religious practices, then shouldn't these protections be afforded to *male* babies as well?

    *sigh*

This just makes zero sense on any level.

Silly, drew. Haven't you heard that strip clubs are also on their way out? Gotta love Georgia. Things have got to be 100% a-ok in this state since the legislature is spending so much freakin' time on telling adults what they shouldn't do.
