That is an unweighted scoring. Some people care more about remote desktops than icons. The site is good for looking to see where one OS is better than another, but you shouldn't read too much into the overall scores because some aspets of an OS are more important than others to a given user (some users obviously care quite a bit about font management).

AMEN I, back in the days of system 8, I hated mac, never thinking that I would want a mac...and then X came...and then a godsend for apple, the apple store:

I once spent like an hour in there messing with osx, the clerk/salesman/genious told me to "go play with the powermacs and do what you o in windows" but i couldnt! why, well no matter how much i tried, i couldnt choak the g5, i couldnt crash an app (allthough i know it happens), and I couldnt get a bluescreen of death, kernal panic, extream lag, and random memory errors.

I couldn't do THAT on a mac, but everything else is cooler, I love GB (bye bye acid) and the finder and sherlock, aw hell the other 150+ cool features that windows lacks. and a compiler is included...no need to waste $$$ on M$-VS and all of that kind of crap.

the only thing that windows has is mozilla firefox, seems faster than safari, but I have never tried mozilla for mac.

THIS IS WHY MY NEXT COMPUTER WILL MOST LIKELY BE A MAC

you would do that to a.....FRIEND? well good thing I never except attachments, if they need to send me a file, it happens while I am in a IM session with them, or I use a vpn, may be a pain...but it works

Slightly OT, but I want people I care about to use Macs because I *like* computers. I think they're valuable tools that are a necessity for a lot people. Me and my friends spend a lot time on computers because we have to. I personally think that having a Mac translates directly into have a better user experience, especially for the needs my friends have. I actually do it out of caring for them.

Just because you HAVE to use a computer doesn't mean it HAS to be a chore. I think if you enjoy your computer, you'll be a happier person. Same goes for anything you have to do at work. If you chair is uncomfortable, find one that is better for you. It's not cultish at all.

Besides that, you can just do more, more easily on a Mac.

if you care, you want them using a Mac. PC's are for people i don't like.

that is quite a charming argument. Sometimes i go further and deliberately recommend people to buy a new pc, because i dislike them so much

Just how are e-mail attachments less safe than transferring the file by other means?

What kind of VPN do you use, how, why?

I have just used a FTP server to transfer files, it's been good enough. If there was especially sensitive info I guess I'd look into SFTP.

What I was really looking for when I started this thread was some solid facts about the differences of the Mac OS X system that makes it superior to Windows XP. Such as...

What makes OS X soooo stable?

Why does Windows crash, and have to be restarted all the time?

What makes OS X more "secure"?

Why does MS always find holes in their systems?

Why is it more difficult to infect OS X with viruses?

Why is it easy to infect XP?

    etc, etc.

The better kinds of Windows do not crash much, and when they do it's often technically not Windows' fault but the device drivers'.

Windows has a fundamentally messed up kernel architecture, that lets device drivers and some specialized software (like antivirus, I think) do what they damn well please. Then the device driver writers do exactly that, Windows doesn't prevent it, and you got a crash.

Security is very complicated and difficult to explain. (plus I don't know much about it) Architecture, open/closed source, backwards compatibility, security and quality engineering, all play a part here.

At least pre-SP2, XP's internal firewall sucked big time. Now, I don't know, but I don't have high hopes.

Worms use security holes, so this tied to the last question.

A big part of why Windows platform has so much virii is the combination of Internet Explorer and Outlook (+Express). They provide powerful scripting interfaces to the rest of Windows and have poor security. This is not directly tied to the quality of the OS - you can get rid of a lot of problems by using something else than IE and Outlook.

and the viruses themselves could do the same thin if the coder set out to, scary place this windows world is...(bump bang thud)...what was that???? oh, ok, another day, another massive hole in the kernal, no biggie, patch it - patch it good.

How do you convert a Wintel User?

I just ripped out my PB 1.33GHZ 17"'er at uni about 1 month ago, let my friends mess around with panther, iLife etc.

Now 3 of them have PB 12"'ers (portabilty), and another has a 14" iBook(value for money). They love the programs but the first impression of in your face sexiness would have swayed them the most. They havent had enough time to realise the full potential and excellence of apples software. Now they're able to be movie directors and music producers.

"Once you go Mac, you dont go back" (to non a mac)
