Well, the eMac has a place in the small boxes along the bottom, but I guess the G5 is just too great to give up its spot in the center .
Well, it IS a nice update. The low end now has 256 MB of RAM, so there are no more Macs with 128 MB anymore. And since it's DDR, there are now no more new Macs that use PC133 anymore. Yeah, it's a pretty good update. I like how it is again better than the much more expensive low end iMac. And it's cool that they're using an 8x Superdrive - not even the G5 has one of those. I would think that indicates the other products will get an 8x pretty soon... here's hoping!
yeah, the more i look at this update, the more i like it...very nice bump to the bottom machine, makes it a nice option for cost conscious consumers, and it tells us that new stuff is ahead for the iMac and PM...can't have a nicer superdrive etc on the bottom machine
And it's cool that they're using an 8x Superdrive - not even the G5 has one of those. I would think that indicates the other products will get an 8x pretty soon... here's hoping!
At least we know what to expect on the Superdrive-front when new PMs and iMacs arrive.
Well, last year, there were I think three updates right in a row, just weeks apart. The 1 GHz iMac, 1.42 GHz PowerMac, 20" Cinema Display were all announced in late January and early February. Earlier in January there was the introduction of the 12" and 17" PowerBooks, and then in April there were the 900 MHz iBooks.
Funny that they updated nearly the entire product line by April.
I wonder if the new iMac will be a revised form factor. If so, wouldn't Apple have a special event to introduce it? I don't think they've ever had a redesigned computer just pop up on the website without such fanfare.
Apple today announced a faster, more affordable line of eMac desktop computers for home and schools, including faster PowerPC G4 processors running at up to 1.25 GHz, 333 MHz DDR memory, faster ATI Radeon graphics and USB 2.0 connectivity to peripherals. Offering even more power and performance, Apple?s most affordable SuperDrive-equipped system is now available starting at just $999 (US).
"The new eMac is the most affordable SuperDrive-equipped Mac ever," said Greg Joswiak, Apple?s vice president of Hardware Product Marketing in the press release. "Offering incredible value right out of the box, eMac provides everything you need for today?s digital lifestyle including iLife '04, Apple?s award-winning suite of applications for creating and managing digital photos, music and movies."
Housed in a remarkably compact all-in-one design, eMac has a crisp 17-inch flat CRT display (16-inch viewable) supporting screen resolutions of up to 1280-by-960 pixels in 24-bit color. Offering fast 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 processors, eMac comes with either a Combo (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) drive for watching DVD movies and burning CDs or Apple?s revolutionary 8x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) for the ability to burn professional-quality DVDs at double the DVD-burning speed as before. eMac comes with hard drives up to 80GB and high-performance ATI Radeon 9200 graphics with dedicated video memory for outstanding graphics performance and realistic game play.
Providing the latest in wireless communications, eMac now also offers an optional internal Bluetooth module, in addition to including a built-in antenna and card slot to support an optional AirPort Extreme Card for 54 Mbps 802.11g fast wireless networking*. With a total of five USB ports (three USB 2.0) and two FireWire ports, eMac desktops offer easy plug-and-play connections to popular peripherals such as iPod, digital video camcorders, and digital still cameras and printers. eMac also includes built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet and a 56K V.92 modem.
Every new eMac includes iLife '04, Apple?s award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications including iTunes for managing digital music, iPhoto for organizing and sharing digital photos, iMovie for digital movie-making, iDVD for creating and burning Hollywood-style DVDs and GarageBand, a revolutionary new music application that turns a Mac® into a professional-quality musical instrument and recording studio.
The eMac comes with Apple?s latest operating system pre-installed. Mac OS X version 10.3 "Panther" delivers more than 150 breakthrough features including iChat AV, an easy to use desktop video conferencing solution; FileVault, which uses the latest security standards and 128-bit encryption technology to ensure that data in the home directory is kept secure; Exposé, a revolutionary new way to instantly view all open windows; Instant On, which wakes the eMac from sleep in just one second; and Automatic Networking, which automatically switches the network connections between Ethernet, 802.11 and modem. With enhanced Windows compatibility, files, printers and network services can easily be shared with Windows users. eMac also comes with a collection of productivity and entertainment titles including AppleWorks, Quicken 2004 for Mac, WorldBook Encyclopedia 2004 Edition and Tony Hawk?s Pro Skater 4.
The eMac line is available immediately through the Apple Store onlne, Apple?s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers in two standard configurations.
The 17-inch flat CRT eMac, for a suggested retail price of $799 (US) includes:
- 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 processor

NAB is not a consumer oriented situation. Apple will not be introducing anything other then pro software, which they already have indicated they would be doing. There's always the possiblity, of course, of some new device but it would be for broadcast professionals.

(I'm guessing ) If the iMac is upgraded with a 1,5GHz G4, 8x superdrive etc. anytime soon, there won't be much fuzz around it and the won't be any change of design.
An iMac G5 deserves a proper introduction and it will get a new design.
But I don't know what is more likely. A faster G4 or a G5..?

What about powermac speedbumps? video/audio guys would love/need that and haveing it at a show of any kind gets them a little more publicity than just throwing them on the net

This reminds me of an old Bloom County (Opus) comic.
"The Banana PC Jr... now with TINT CONTROL!"
Scheisse.
