the links pretty clearly come down on the side of 'myth'

    edit add:

a real arachnid (but not a spider), that is real scary looking,

but nothing like the "venomous, flesh eating" tabloid version.

So the creature is real but it's abilities are grossly overstated.

That's good, because the Camel Spider is not actually a spider.

    See? no problem. . . everything's cool.

The photo in the original link is deceptive... they're not that big in comparison to the soldier's legs... there are hands close to the camera holding the camel spiders.

I've seen bugs that look almost exactly like those on (rare) occasion in my house. Obviously not that big, but with the same elongated head and flattish abdomen. No visible thorax, though I didn't know if they had 6 legs and a pair of leg-like antennae or 8 legs.

I caught one once along with an earwig. I put them both in a cup and I assumed the earwig would devour it. Turns out the opposite happened, I came back to the cup the day after and the only thing left in the cup were the hind pinchers and legs of the earwig and the spider-like thing was gone.

I guess I know it's called a Solpugid/Solifugid now. The ones here are about the same size as most ordinary house spiders. I actually took a photo of one once because I wanted help identifying it, but I can't seem to find it now. Most people I asked online thought it was a termite.

There's a photo a bit down on the first page of a specimen from California. (for Eugene) They say it's about an inch in either direction. The second page has a bunch more.

The photo in the first link is true, but is taken in a weird fashion, that give the feeling it's has big as a thig. If you look carefully at the picture it's smaller than an hand (but sufficiantly big for my taste ... )
