New processor upgrades at long last!!!

Phew!! I was starting to wonder if anyone was gonna get their hands on the newer G4's but now that Powerlogix has announced their G4 upgrade cards up to 1 Ghz I'm very happy!! So first up, who's going to upgrade? I am! But I have a question to those in the know; Do you think my Cube/450 will need a fan if I put in say, a 800Mhz card? Esp since I want to put in a Geforce2 MX at the same time....? Thanks

You'll need to do some hacking to get 800 out of your cube. I think that powerlogix may have locked the bus multiplier on their upgrades cause the 100Mhz system bus machines are limited to 750Mhz, while the 133Mhz machines can go to 1Ghz according to their announcement. One interesting bit that was unexplained was the cache situation. Various sizes of L3 will be available. IIRC, in the past, some upgrades were offered with larger caches than the standard configs from Apple. 4MB L3 caches would be cool, butmaybe not possible. They'll probably just offer variations of 512KB, 1MB, and 2MB L3.

Matsu, where in the PR does it say the 100 MHz bus machines are limited to 750 MHz? I think it may be a case of rounding up a 733 to 750. I'm not sure which machines are limited to 8x multiplier too, but that would at least let you go up to 800 MHz. Nothing in PowerLogix's PR suggests a multiplier lock.

The only comany I remember that offered large caches on their upgrades was Met@Box/JoeCard, and they didn't last long. I bought an upgrade from them once and I liked it a lot.

Someone needs to interrogate them and get more details. I just got an under $1000 (Accelerator+hard drive+Video Card+Jag upgrade) compelling alternate to buying a new Mac. But hey Apple, I can be seduced with enough power....

If you look at the picture of the new card on Powerlogix home page you will see that the card itself has a fan attached. I don't think you will have a choice in the matter.

Well, this news is great! It makes you wonder ever more what's coming this MWNY... Just more fuel for the fire in additon to all the recent updates of products etc.

So I guess the Blue and White G3s are never going to be faster than 500mhz?

Yeah. I also has a feeling that there will be some new mac at a lot higher clock speed @ MWNY after I heard this announcement.

    As for B/W. I think we will see G3 @ 800+ Mhz. Putting a G4 into a B/W isn't really worth it.

Someone from Powerlogix posted a note on MacNN saying they were testing cards for the Cube and hoped to be able to ship them without a fan. It will also have a different heat sink. The photo is the card for the tower.

1GHz would be lovely, but if the price is right, 750MHz with, say, a 2MB L3 cache would be a nice upgrade for my 450 Cube.

    w00t! A boost for my G4!

Oh crap. How much are these things gonna cost?

Hopefully some overclocking features will be present.

    EDIT:

Quick Question: I have a PM G4 400 MHz (AGP graphics). Does anyone know if a 1 GHz upgrade will be available for my system? The press release is a little hazy. Do the 100 and 133 upgrades both go up to a gig? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

There is nothing with the G4 that stops them at 7.5 bus speed and hence a 100 MHz bus computer at 750 MHz AFAIK the max multiplier on the faster G4s are 14x (up from the slower G4s 12x and the G3s 10X).

So it should be possible to run the old 100 MHz bus AGPs up to 1.4 GHz. It gives a CPU/bus speed ratio of 14 comparable to the ratio of 15 of the dual gig G4 (1000+1000/133=15)

I have a G4/400 AGP myself and when it will feel to slow a 550 MHz upgrade will still be to slow. At least a 800 MHz upgrade will be needed!

I started getting second thoughts about getting a Radeon 8500 card if the there was no CPU upgrades in the forseeable future but now I have changed my mind <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

The best part of this announcement is that Powerlogix will be able to keep using this board to make faster upgrades as Apollos get faster.

    My question is:

Pismo upgrades? I would consider that, perhaps.

For anyone interested here is the discussion going on at MacNN where a supposed Powerlogix employee is giving answers to questions posted here. He is using the name "powerlogix"

    <a href="http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=12;t=005608"; target="_blank">MacNN Discussion</a>

I say "supposed" because he has not provided an email address. He just puts powerlogix.com at the end of his posts. But he seems to know things.

G4 in a B/W not worth it? What do Sawtooths (Sawteeth?) have that B/W's don't? AGP? Big Frickin' Deal. 33mhz faster bus (maybe?) So.

The only main difference is no AGP, and I can live with that, I'm looking into a Radeon PCI.

In short, PowerLogix would sell a LOT of B/W upgrades. I'd buy the fastest possible.

AGP=Quartz Extreme= future of Macs. Maybe Powerlogix decided everyone was finally gonna ditch their B/W G3's. I remember how blown away i was when they came out.... Sigh.. But now I have a (soon-to be-dual 1Ghz) Cube and you just cant avoid that smugness that comes from owning the coolest computer Apple ever made

There are no cheap cubes on ebay....any more!!!

Well, PowerLogix just granted your wish for a <a href="http://www.powerlogix.com/news/press.html#pismo"; target="_blank">Pismo G4 upgrade</a>. The $300 price is certainly tempting. And you get to keep the versatility of double expansion bays. Much better than buying an older TiBook, IMHO.

Er, they won't work with a "bronze keyboard" G3 400, will they?

[edit: I'm impressed. They ship it to a firm to do it for you! still for $300. Not bad.]

Sawtooth mobo supports MPX and double the bandwidth (400MBps vs. 800MHz). The 133MHz mobo's support 1.0GBps. Also the 745X series has problems with the MPC106 memory controller which is why they will never be made for it. But there is no reason the 750FX could not be made for it, You would just have to design a proper ZIF card. (and over clocking could be done through software!)

Dang then, I'm waiting for a 750fx. Reggie is so cool...

There are NO rumors! MWNY must have something we didn't see coming... (ie "Beyond the Rumor Sites, Way Beyond! lol)
