I saw the eMac today in person and let me say that it's okay. It is rather large and really needs the swivel base to make it look less like a big slab of cheese.
The screen was flickering quite a bit at all resolutions, but the sales guy insures me that it's just the current it's plugged into (hmm..not sure about that).
It's certainly not as elegant as the LCD iMac.
But the larger screen really begs for the iMac to be upgraded to 17" and make the distinction even greater. We don't want another Cube on our hands.
Without the swivel, it really looks like it's a bloated hunk of white cheese, it's just too close to the desk. Luckily I'm getting mine with the swivel.

That could be, satchmo, because I just played with one this morning, and it seemed fine to me even at the max resolution.
I was pretty impressed actually, nice machines. Didn't seem to be any more of a large boulder than the original iMacs IMHO.

Well SONOFABIITCH! One more post and I'm screwed!!
I better take a day off here and re-evaluate my life.
One minute, mild mannered Mac geek, the next - confirmed member of the 4 digit geek crusade. Oh, the shame.
It's my opinion that Apple spent little to no time putting any sort of "style" into the eMac.
I think a lot of people screamed "So where's a machine for education that can do the same things as the new iMac but is cheaper?!" after the sunflower was released.
SJ said, "um, yeah. Hey, do you guys still have that preliminary design for the 17" CRT G4 iMac? Make it work for education. I want it on my desk tomorrow!"
And the eMac (possibly the most BORING Apple design EVER) was born.
Yeah, I suppose it'd look better on the swivel base. By the way, cheese anyone?

True, while not pretty, at least they had some curves.
The Macintosh II ci and cx were pretty drab too. Essentially a rectangular box devoid of any character. It looked even worse if you attempted to prop a 13" (some people even put a 19") display on top of it.
Okay, I'm hereby amending my original assertion. I had a chance to see an eMac at the San Diego Apple store a few days ago. It was a) on a stand (makes a HUGE difference) and b) was on a table that allowed all-around viewing of it, so I could appreciate and view more than just the very front (like the way CompUSA has their stuff displayed).
That front is still quite large and stark and looks like there's a lot of wasted space, but (perhaps this was seeing it in a store surrounding by other Apple coolness?), the eMac looked much more attractive and cool than I originally gave it points for.
Better yet, in the 20 or so minutes I was there, two of them were sold! This was a weekday afternoon, no less. And there were always 2-3 people around the two display models while I was there. Seemed that lots of people were digging the idea of a $1100 17" G4 iMac.
Of course, we've been yelling for one for over a year...
