Hell yeah. I played Fantasma to death when it came out...still do from time to time.
A band I recently heard that I quite liked is Suffrajet. Nothing groundbreaking about them (just good edgy rock...kind of like Queens of the Stone Age with a pretty girl singer) but I reckon they'll be getting a load of attention in months to come. Their website has a couple of mp3s to download.
A girl who listens to Mr. Bungle? I think I'm developing a small crush. Really, I'll listen to anything that Mike Patton has his fingers in (Fantomas, FNM, Dillinger Escape Plan, etc.). Even his solo stuff is wacky-cool (Adult Themes for Voice and Pranzo Oltranzista).
Modest Mouse, Deathcab for Cutie and The Postal Service are all good picks. If you're into those I'd also suggest Grandaddy and Sparklehorse (especially the album 'It's A Wonderful Life'). Maybe even Small Brown Bike or Neutral Milk Hotel. Or American Analog Set. Tindersticks are also great if anyone likes somber Nick Cave style stuff.
My greatest 'unknown' band that I've been listening to for nearly two decades are 'The Legendary Pink Dots' and basically anything else that Kaspel sees fit to do.
I'd also recommend Soul Coughing (even though they broke up). Just great stuff to listen too.
Hell Yes. Soul Coughing are great. Speaking of great NYC bands, Firewater is worth checking out. Tod A (previously of Cop Shoot Cop) is friggin awesome on stage.
don't know the pale, The Postal Service is awesome!!!!!!!!, don't know Frou Frou, Dolour, Gotan Projects, or Mr. Bungle, but Muse is excellent.
looks like i'm going to be doing alot of cd buying pretty soon
Sweet! My musical tastes are spreading like the plague! *evil cackle*
The Pale's cd is called "Gravity Gets Things Done", and it is most excellent. I'm not sure how easy it is to find, though.

Ah, I've heard of Grandaddy, but I haven't gotten around to picking up their cd yet. My friends described them as having an "8-bit, sort of video-game" sound, which is definitely intriguing. Sparklehorse, Small Brown Bike, Neutral Milk Hotel, American Analog Set, and Tindersticks are all new to me. Yay for new music from obscure bands with fantastic names!
Also, they're well known, which is probably why they haven't been brought up yet, but Radiohead is an exceptional band. Check out some of their stuff if you haven't yet. Jon Brion is also an amazing artist. His work shows up in "Magnolia" and "Punch Drunk Love". The song "Here We Go" rocks my world right now.

If you're going to pick up a Grandaddy CD, pick up 'The Sophtware Slump'. I think it's their finest.
I'm also a big Radiohead fan, but 'Hail To The Thief' didn't tweak me the way that 'Kid A' and 'OK Computer' did. Look around for their 'B-Sides' album. It's great.
Good music is out there if you look hard enough for it, these guys are good. So I'm surprised nobody else has commented about them either way. Some of the best American Roots music of all time.

only one i know there is future shock, they are really good, i like the song Sparc, by them!
Nitin production is possibly the best in the world. Good songs, too.
Jimi Tenor uses mainly live instruments but shows what the music of tomorrow could be.
Hybrid
Front Line Assembly (Delerium side project).
Theivery Corporation.
Front 242. Weird but good.
Aim. Semi-chill.
