"Don't see your friends. See your friends girlfriends without cloth!"
Wasn't there a Sony Video Camera on the market a few years ago with this capability. Actually it was an infra-red camera made to shoot in the dark but it had tendency to see through light clothing when used in daylight. Apparently there were many guys at the beach with that camera during that month. Sony took it off the market as soon as they found out that their equipment was being misused.
That would be about the only thing that I think could improve the iSight. I doubt we will see a redesigned iSight before Sept., but whenever we do it will probably just be a little smaller with some new clip or cable or something.
Of course, I would rather just see the price come down on the iSight. Or at least offer a two-camera bundle at a slightly reduced rate. Am I the only one who really thinks they should sell a bundle with a pair of cameras and two copies of iChatAV?
I respectfully disagree with those who believe that the iSight cannot be much improved. Its maximum resolution should be upgraded significantly to at least full-screen—1280x1024, or higher.
Responders may be quick to point out that many chat clients don't support resolutions that high! It'd make chat slow, unwieldy, require the best connections.
The key is in the software. If what I have seen posted upon this forum is correct, the iSight can be used with iMovie. I suspect that at some point it may be compatible with other programs, even if they are Apple-only. Why should we settle for 640x480 resolution (or whatever it is, currently) for video recording?
One compatibility change might be made to iChat, which could scale down the resolution of the input to whatever is necessary for chat.
The greatest prohibitive factor, in my own opinion, would be the cost. Apple for this likely has no reason, and little enough demand, to increase resolution and sell the iSight for the same price. Double the resolution? Perhaps double the cost, which would quickly kill this model unless some new application were created—an iSight with a microphone that doubles as a VoIP device of some sort, or something like that. Perhaps I am simply alive in a fantasy world.
I have also seen mentioned here the price—it would be good for it to go down. What of a novel solution? Apple drops a newer model of the current iSight to $99, then makes a higher-resolution iSight for $149 or $159. Once again, perhaps simply a fantasy.

Is not the higher resolution you are looking for greater than HDTV? Is not 640x480 already greater than standard TV resolution? What you should really want is a higher frame rate, an iSight that has a faster ??? (do they call the chip that captures the video a cmos sensor?) one of those.
The higher resolution would be pointless until really fast broadband becomes commonplace. Very few if any people will actually have use for videochatting at that resolution.
I know that some might mention that iMovie may be able to record at the higher resolution but how many people will want to carry their computer around to record a home video. Most people will buy a real video camera.
I'd imagine the iSight probably has a long future ahead of it before it's updated. Even as webcams start becoming higher res, the Broadband to support higher res video chat isn't exactly there, but in addition to that, all apple needs to do is lower the price at that point. I'd wager that the iSight will definitely get an update eventually.
Aside from the expected upgrades, higher res, better microphone, firewire 800 even.
I think a valid thing apple could implement would be an automatic base, If possible, something in the software that would track your motion maybe. That'd be pretty neat, so that the camera stays focused on you.
Why? iSight 2 would be future hardware. I think the forum descriptions need to be a bit clearer on that. I thought future hardware was future hardware was future hardware. But I guess it isn't always the case.
xSight X-ray version of the iSight "Don't just see your friends. See your friends' skeletal structure"

Obviousley someone would hack it so it only x-rayd the cloths off.....hummmmm, then apple could give ISights to every serority and save them the time of...

As part of the rumor I heard, the new iChat will be windows compatible and will give us iSight compatability on the PC side. OR was it iSight compatability was to be built into another PC version of some chat software. Sorry, I forgot.
It will be aim on windows untill the ichat store opens

So, there was various footage of people at public pools recording chicks getting out of pools. In broad daylight.
I remember when they actually SHOWED that on Italian national news...
I guess they figured no one in Japan would ever see the footage and sue Italian State TV

Sure... no viewfinder means having some weird surprises as to WHAT you actually recorded... but still... fun gadget
If its hooked up to an iPod, couldn't the iPod screen serve as a viewfinder?

Is the iPod screen capable? How many shades of gray can it handle? Or are you referring to a future version of the Pod?

Future version if it needs to be. I don't know if the current Pod could do it.
