Elton John has been in the music industry for a LONG time. He's faced his own share of discrimination for his sexual preference.
Reading the article I think he just has a hard time putting his finger on the pulse of the American Idol voting public. As a performer he recognizes talent and really cannot see how others cannot recognize that same talent. He's not upset because there are too many whites or too many blacks in the finals. He's upset because the 3 ladies that he see as being the best are "constantly" at the bottom. They just happen to be black. That most likely means that people are voting along color lines and not racial lines. Thus Racist.
I watched season one and I thought Tamaya or Kelly Clarkson would be the winner. Both had the something extra that makes the difference. I don't know about this season but seems that John Stevens is being helped out...perhaps by the Clay Aiken fans. I personally would vote for the person that I feel is the best singer. I don't care what race they are. The Music Biz is one of the most colorblind areas you can be in. I like great music from anyone.
I was waiting for Donald Trump to be labeled a racist because he picked Bill or Kwami and made Omarosa the villain. I even placed a bet with my wife that the NAACP would be all over the beltway shows screaming bloody murder. I was really quite surprised when it didn't happen.

Because, whether you want to believe it or not, they aren't out to scream "racism!!!" anytime a person of color does not get ahead. Shocking that they'd actually stand for something, I know.
That is opera soprano Deborah Voight (no, not Eddie Izzard) considered to be the finest female soprano opera singers on Earth. She was dropped from Ariadne by London's Royal Opera because she was deemed too big to wear a little black cocktail dress in the contemporary production.
On NPR her response to this was "If Brittany Spears begins singing opera...I'm in real trouble." Laughter ensues...
