<strong>I understand we got one at the college where I work, but the IT department hasn't figured out how to install it in the rack, so it isn't running yet! <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" /> </strong><hr></blockquote>
Wow - if the IT department can't even get it in the rack I can only imagine the state of the network.
The front mounting screws are on ears behind teh pull out handle / tray ears. Its overly obvious looking at the front of the Xserve how its fastened to the rack. Plus the Xserve is rather large (deep) maybe their racks aren't deep enough?
Maybe they think Apple has a bunch of clods working there and didnt design it properly.
Or they are just some BoS undergrads who would rather download illegal music on the university's network all day instead of actually doing any work.

I see you've met the IS department at UC Santa Barbara.
a little off topic, but does anyone have a recommendation for a rack. i'm looking for a smaller one that will hold around 10U's or so. if it had a locking door on it it'd be a plus.

The Xserve is pretty standard in terms of depth. Our Sun E220R is 27.25 inches for example. The Xserve is 28 inches.
Now I admit that most support forums are for people with problems and so people WITHOUT them tend to stay away, but the posts regarding the XServe on Apple's Server support forum have less than glowing things to say about the XServe.

I personally don't think the problem is on Apple's end. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />
