    Holy crap. That sounds awsome...

Does this mean a lower market share of Mac? Or higher?

Doesn't sound good for apple when the richest company in the world is spending billions and years to make their next OS.

Money and time don't mean a thing when you have the level of talent and quality-control that Apple has (yes, I know some people bitch about inconsistancies, etc, but we still have it WAY better than Windows users). Microsoft can throw as much $$ at it as they want, but unless they have a distinct vision other than "let's add some cool stuff," THEY are the ones who are in trouble.

On the contrary, it sounds bad for Microsoft that is takes so many years and so much money to produce a noteworthy upgrade.

This seems too stupid even for Microsoft. How can they develope and test an operating system on machines that don't even touch those specs?? How are people going to use the alpha version? I just don't get it.

When Longhorn comes out (in about two years from now) you will be able to buy a PC that meets the listed specs for well under $1000 -- so what's the big deal?

People who want to keep using their old computer will stay with XP or an older variant of Windows, and all the new PCs will come with Longhorn installed.

Even nowadays I recommend people get at least 512mb of ram for Macs or PCs, and the way things are going I can easily see the need for 2GB of ram in a few years

Of course, I'm still unsure why Longhorn is supposed to superior to the operating systems of today.

You know what's going to be really funny. . . like borderline f-ing hilarious, actually. . .

Is when, in 2008, MS realizes that all of the chips of the day are not sequential, and will require them to rewrite the code or else have it suck major wang.

It's because of MS that I associate CS people with these airy, distanced idiots who can't seem to grasp several concepts all centering on the fact that computers require electricity.

Even if the hardware venders do bend over to these specs, longhorn will flop because the systems people oun now won't run the darn thing, one of the main reasons(outside of being Mac/os in the first place) that osx was implemented so quick is that it runs on everything G3 and up (I have even seen heavily hacked 68k boxes running osx)

windows xp was much the same, ran on just about any pent. class computer 200 mhz or better and even older than that if you sacrificed the gui garbage.

If my 2.2 ghz p4 cant handle the damnd os without a massive upgrade then my wintel rigs will be Lintel rigs over night, this is true for many people too so M$ meeds to as my dad used to say "shape up or ship out" if they choose the latter the world will be a better place.

    POWER 2 OSX!

I don't think you saw OSX on a 68k Mac. Maybe it was themed out to make System 7/8 to look like OSX but it was not OSX.

Unless "heavily hacked" means gutted out and replaced with PPC

innards from another Mac... which would not make it a 68k Mac anymore.

So, you sir, are a lier.

My bad, not mutch of an old mac guy, this is what osx was running on, may have been skinned, may have been upgraged, it turns out it may have been a PPC G3

here is what I found at everymac.com, one of these two, probably the G3, now that I think about it, but they look so similar that I thought it was the 68k.

    the old one:

and the G3 one that I more than likely saw

I am about 99.999% sure that he did not see OS X running on a 68k mac, but I wouldn't call him a liar.

I think he saw it on a PPC earlier than the G3, like maybe a 603 or 604 machine and was just confused or misinformed.

Everyone here is forgetting M$ Power. They can do whatever they want. They don't need to sell Longhorn to exhisting users. Millions of PC's are sold everyyear. Each one of those will come with Longhorn. Its inevitable.

People are lemins and they will continue to follow the leader over the cliff, year after year after year.

How can Apple update OS X, giving us cool new features yet have it run Snappier(TM) on the same hardware while with MS OS upgrades you have to replace much of the computer?

    Kinda weird, isn't it?

The intro of Longhorn might cause SME to reassess their IT infrastructure in a Big Way. Several paths might seem more open to them than before - namely linux.

What's amazing about these specs is that Apple gets effectively the same stuff happening with my 700 MHz flat panel iMac with its 32 MB graphics card, 512 MB RAM, and such. They did this about 2 years ago too. This isn't a truly fair comparison since surely Loghorn's graphics will be more advanced than Quartz Extreme's at the time of its introduction or even now. However, I doubt we're talking an order of magnitude difference in abilities though the hardware requirements for the full Aero Glass experience seems an order of magnitude more advanced.

    Well, I right now have a Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB ram, 120 GB HD, and a Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB).

    Wonder how it would run?

The current builds will run fine on that setup. But when it is out the door I wonder if that setup will cut it.
