This has been the worst kept secret in the world, he was such an attractive candidate that the G.O.P. turned a blind eye and hoped it wouldn't percolate.
But it did.
The ouster was orchestrated by the republicans not the democrats, their thinking was they could tap ex-governor edgar (who they wanted in the first place) to fill the slot and he would run (it's a slim chance now) as he wouldn't have to raise money or go thru the primaries. (which is why he didn't enter the primaries)
Edgar is the only republican in Illinois who would have a chance against Obama. If i may agree with Scott, Obama is very able and should make a great senator. He's a beacon on an otherwise dim democratic horizon. Since he can't have presidential aspirations he could be a huge force in Washington.
I only vaguely know political and news people and this story is exactly as it was rumored about in december. Obviously this seat is extremely important seat to the G.O.P. and it looks like they want to make a stand for it.
I heard a joke yesterday, that Judy Baar Topinka (the illinois republican party head) asked anyone name Ryan to please resign from the party.
This was an odd story. Apart from the issue of releasing the records, what was this guy thinking of? He was telling the other republicans in advance that there was nothing in the records to worry about. After the records came out he was arguing that it was not a big deal. He should know his own party better than that. He should know politics better than that. It is hard to imagine that the republicans in the midwest would lightly gloss over something like that. At the first hint that the records might be released he should have had a private meeting with the top members of his party and confessed all so they could have planned a way to work through it.
When Arnold was running for governor here in California and the stories were circulating about his participation in group sex and being something of a sexual predator the right wing talk show hosts here tried to put all that in a good light. Things like "good experiences to have in one's life". It was delicious to listen to that spin after they were so high and mighty about Clinton.
