Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.5

Apple Computer this afternoon released Mac OS X 10.3.5, a system upgrade to Mac OS X "Panther" that the company says will deliver enhanced functionality and improved reliability. The update is free and recommended for all users.



As originally reported by AppleInsider, the Mac OS X 10.3.5 update includes updated Mail and Image Capture applications, improved font management, ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers, additional FireWire and USB device compatibility, improved Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse and Bluetooth phones, and improved compatibility for third party applications.



The system update also bundles previous standalone security updates, improved support for NTFS formatted volumes and improved reliability for user logins and mounting of home directories in a networked environment.



Mac OS X 10.3.5 is available over Software Update or as a standalone update from Apple.com

    Downloaded both the security patch and 10.3.5 using System Preferences. The security patch was downloaded and installed before 10.3.5 was downloaded - Apple's preference.



    No problems yet - even VPC is clean.

    Same here.



    Downloaded and installed with no problems on a dual 2gig G5. Screen rez was reset, so I assume there are new GL drivers.

    All's well with my TiBook...So far so good - no noticeable changes to me.



    I checked software update this afternoon to nothing, but saw the update was out via VersionTracker.



    Of course I shot first and asked q's later - as it downloaded I came to AI to see if there were any probs so far...

    Read the article in MobileWhack about how you can use your bluetooth cell phone to act as a remote control for your Macintosh computer. This is a new feature with 10.3.5. I think it is going to end up as a feature where you can call your Mac and ask it to water your plants.

    That's a java update. It's also not really a rumor since the developer documentation specifically states that it improves applet speed and works better with safari.

    SERIOUS PROBLEMS AFTER UDATE



    Posted this in Apple Discussions...looks like some others are having similar problems...NOT GOOD!



    I was installing (I checked off the Update & The Security Update)...It had finished the install part and started Optimizing. It was not finished (It was taking a while because I'm on an old G4/450..(waiting on my G5)) and I forgot about it and put my iPod into the Dock. The second I did that I got the "Grey Screen of Death" and the message to Restart. I restarted and the screen hung up on the Grey Apple screen with the rotating "loading" thingy. I restarted several times and let it sit there for about 30-40 min. No luck.



    Then I booted to the install disc and ran Disk Permissions and Repair Disk. Restarted...Same thing.



    I was going to do an "Archive & Install" but I can't because I don't have room on the drive. (Only 2GB Left on the drive). I booted to another drive (that I'm work now on temporarily) and tried to delete some things to make room for the Archive and Install.



    GET THIS! I can't delete ANYTHING on the messed up drive. It makes the delete sound but remains in place. I went to the terminal and tried to delete from there as SUDO and got an "Invalid Argument" for anything I tried to delete.



    I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Anyone have any ideas?



    APPLE PLEASE HELP!

    My wildassed guess... sounds like the drive isn't being mounted as read/write, just read. This wouldn't show up as a problem with Disk Utility. Try booting into single-user mode. Hold down Cmd-S on boot. If it gets *THAT* far, then things are probably easily recoverable.



    If not, then chances are that there's a mangled pre-optimization cache hanging around mucking things up on launch. I can't recall where that's stored, but find and wipe that file, and it might get you quite a ways.

    No, 10.3.5 just supports the built in remote features in some phones.

    Thanks man, I tried to boot to Single User Mode and got to the black command line screen. Not sure what to do from there I typed "exit" and a whole bunch of crap came up and just hung. One thing I noticed was:



    /System/Library/StartUpItems/NumCompatibleCheck/StartUpParameters.pList for item NumCompatibleCheck :: No such File or Directory. Any thoughts on that? Did a google on Pre-Opimization Cache, no luck yet, but still looking.

    Ah! Okay, single-user success means that the problem isn't in the kernel layers.



    When you boot into single-user, you'll see a line right above the prompt that says "Drive mounted read only..." Do what it says. That will *ensure* that the drive is okay and mounted read/write. If that works, we can eliminate that as a problem and start looking for cached errors.
