I know quite a few of people who work in Apple's resellers and service provider.
Because they know me and I know them and I do buy stuff and refer people to get to their places very often. Plus they do have huge volume of sales so that Apple gives them further discounts.
And those resellers sell me machines at their cost + 1 or 2 %
So when I bought all my machines I bought them at the cost that's even lower then the educational discount.
Example. A Dual GHz SlowSilver(tm) costs $4799 MSRP. Educational discount (here in western Canada) is $4520. But I bought it for $4400 + $450 CDN rebate....
They told me that they have to maintain $100000 of sales per year in order to maintain the discount from Apple Canada. But selling machines at MSRP is going to make it hard to make sales. That's why they are willing to sacriface some profit to attract more buying. They are looking for volume.
Of course they aren't selling to everyone at my price
So how do we get to know these resellers and when to put he squeeze on them? Got to find guys that won't make their quota to get only slightly too expensive macs. Steve Jobs, you're such a fvcking a$$hole, Edu-prices wouldn't even make a decent retail price. At this rate Apple consumer product will not survive another decade. If things don't change, the Apple we know will be dead by 2012.
I doubt Apple will ever die. Right now I think the Consumer LVL machines are fairly priced for what you get. education discount is basicly a joke but oh well... the emac is a great deal for what you get and the iMac prices are fine IMO. Although I would like to see the iBooks drop a little more in price so when I go to buy another one but that won't be for a while any way.

When you speak French as well as he speaks English then you may critisize as much as you like (but you probably still shouldn't )

Oh, I don't think Apple will disapear, but you won't be able to buy a onsumer level box from them if things keep up. In a decade from now, computers will be absolute commodities. Right now they start of expensive and go dirt cheap within 12 months. In ten years they'll start off dirt cheap and be virtually disposable. $299 will describe a fully capable entry level machine (not just Office, but 3-d and A/V editing too). Apple is having enormous difficulty delivering a 999 machine -- they have not in the last 5 years been able to manage a single compelling model at that price. If they even just hold or slightly decrease their prices in that time their machines will be so far over-priced relative to the competition that todays grosly over-priced/underpowered offerings will seem like bargains. No one will pay that kind of premium, neat OS or not. Likely, Apple will have a lot of great technology to sell, but it will all be on the high-end where they can get the premiums they're used to.
It could get better, things could turn around, but if the slow bleed continues, Apple will be transformed from a computer company to a high-end solutions provider. At this rate, your children won't be using macs.
In 10 years ? This is VERY far away in the future. The world may be dying in 2012, because of G. Bush actions today. And Apple may fall tomorrow, because of some &*?%($# like ENRON did (and many others).
I remember 10 years ago. At that time, people said Apple will desappear in a year or two. It always made me laugh, because we can't predict the future. IMHO, Apple is doing fine, especially with the actual economy. OS X was a very wise move from Apple.
As for the "buyed" word, well, yes English isn't my natural language. Sorry about that.
If Apple was to die it would hurt other companies also. I doubt Apple will ever go under as a company. They gain a few more users all the time I am one of them, and I know a lot of other people are welling to use a Mac also.
& 1MB L3 cache/processor?? Is it some thing that you notice??? I was looking at getting a dual 1ghz but I may go with the dual 867mhz even though it only has 133MHz System Bus but having 167MHz System Bus doesn't seem like it would be any reason to spend extra money for.
English not a natural language, eh? Damned separatists! hehehe...
Don't sweat it Kali, I can tell from your writing that you're far more bilingual than most Canadians in English Canada. I wish my French was as good as your English mais je ne parles pas francais (sorry no French characters) I read French, though -- product of a strange education in English.

Remember. Steve Jobs is pretty greedy. He wants to cover a lot of areas
