This is one reason I am leary of getting a Mac laptop (this is the ONLY reason outside of $$ which is slowly comeing along.) Why have a notebook if you have to carry a bulky floppy drive with you, and the media, 1.44MB??? please, that would be hard pressed to hold half of a decent powerpoint presentation.

BTW: do stores actualy sell floppies any more? the campus bookstore charges way too much for cd-rs so I will only buy floppies there as a last resort.

pretty sad, a technology I first used when I was three, on my grandpas IBM 286 with a 20 meg hdd, and a 10 mhz proc iirc, is still a crucial part of life in the days of 200+ gb hdds and 3 ghz procs.

Eh?? Needing a floppy once in a while is enough to keep you from buying a PowerBook?!?

That's like turning down a new Lexus because you'll have to buy a cassette adaptor for your iPod...

Why not just buy an external USB Floppy drive?

He said he doesn't want to carry around the extra item.

Given how often you'll likely need a floppy, ever, I can't imagine needing to haul one around all the time. Just keep it on hand at home.

All the college bookstores here in the San Francisco Bay Area have floppies. Well, I haven't been in the Stanford bookstore lately, but I'd guess that if they do have floppies, it would be with the Stanford logo printed on them.

Because 99% of PC notebooks don't have floppy drives either, and the ones that do are 8+lbs. The powerbook+drive is going to be a lot lighter and less bulky too.

WOW, thanks, I havn't looked at pc notebooks in like a year so I didn't realise that manufacturers other than DULL were getting rid of them.

Umm, I don't know what the 800mhz G4 imacs cost, but the current low-end imac @ 1Ghz is $80 more expensive than the first dell I picked. 3ghz, 1GB, 15inch flat panel.

A few areas of my school still use floppies. I've been to labs/workshops where not all the systems aren't networked, and are way too old to have CDRWs or USB.

You can also give away floppies. Giving away CDRWs or thumbdrives is a little expensive.

I just realized I'm thankful the users at work don't have cd burners. They already use company email/digicams/scanners/printers as their own personal photo labs(against company policy). I don't want to guess the calls I'd get after they find out they can burn cds all day.

All the computers at my school allow USB access, have SD card readers, floopy drives, et al. But to make a student use floppys only ? Thats pretty 1980s

If you watch the ads it is not too hard to find free CD-Rs. They sell a pack of 50 or 100 for something like $25 with a $25 rebate which equals free. You never see floppy disks given away free.

I can't even remember when I last used floppies on a regular basis, Probably 9 or 10 years ago. They were so unreliable. I shudder to think that anyone keeps anything important on one for more than a few weeks.

yea, it is kind of like watching Max Headroom to learn about modern technology

UPODATE: after talking to a teacher, I found that the usb ports on the back of the systems work, they just disconnected the wire on the front ones, my question is if they are so intent on limiting usb, why not just delete the usb drivers at windows install(it is possible) he said that "the techs don't make much sence", but I think this may not have even been up to the techs, this kind of decision may have its origins in the office of some paper pushing beuracrat who wouldnt know tech if it bit them ...well...you know.

Oh my gosh! I was trying to remember the last time I used a floppy...and then I realized I couldn't...because it was like a 100 years ago.

But hey...who am I to talk...I still have a couple of buggy whips laying around.

I have to use floppy discs at work because you can't make a bootable CD on a Windows machine without one.
