VESA - CREATIVE Minds Wanted!
Okay boys and girls...
I for one love the fact that Apple has finally gone VESA for both it's display line and now it's iMac line. The major issue I see now is finding a NICELY designed VESA wall mount. Have you guys seen the current selection? PATHETIC and DRAB and I'm being kind (search for your self, google is your friend). You'll find a ton of these 'things' usually priced between $70 and $250 but so far they all have one thing in common...
So... creative types, what can YOU come up with?
Points for thinking things out. Tilt/swivel/hight adjustability, clever retractability for getting things out of the way, etc, etc, etc...
Extra Points for giving some thought to cable management and keyboard storage.
Now that Apple is pro-vesa I'm sure some smart company will step up to the plate with something "Apple-Worthy"...
Feel free to post your ideas, I'd love to see the possibilities!

I like it.
I've been looking around for VESA-based stands today, but the problem is that a lot of the ones I've found don't support the iMac's weight. The neoFlex is awesome, but only supports up to 18 lbs. The 20-inch iMac's 18.5 lbs; the 20-inch is 25.2 lbs!
That's what we need.

They do make heavy duty swing-arm mounts as well that can hold up to 45lbs.
Looks beefy and strong.
Spendy though at $275 for the Vesa Mount version.
Thinking about it, the dual arm makes sense when they have a heavy screen to support and not much weight in the base. Rather than have the two sections extend out and out further like in the diagram, maybe they double back on themselves, so the arm joins the base directly under the computer. That way you can rotate the screen around, move it up and down, tilt it back and forward - just like the last iMac, without chance of overbalancing the thing.
Hmmmmm...
If Apple don't do it, I hope somebody else will!

Sure do. See Apple's iMac page here for details:
The iMac offers the smallest footprint ever, but you can make that zero with an optional VESA mount. Hang it from the wall or swing it around on your desk. (Coming soon to the Apple store.)

Nevertheless, the arm I find most amazing is their:

Which supports up to 30 lbs. (enough to support a 30" cinema or even the new iMac!). Should work great with Apple's $30 VESA 100 mount for their displays (and presumably iMac). It also:
Extends up to 42", with more than 28" of vertical range. (Yikes.)
Arm rotates 360° at three joints, the tilt mechanism can tilt over 200°.
Completely internal cable management.
It's one of their more expensive models (roughly twice as expensive as others at $570), but it seems amazing that such a beast even exists off-the-shelf.
Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with their products, but do hope to do so soon.
Good luck,

So does Apple.

Ergotron - expensive as hell, but quite nice. We have several dozen of these in patient rooms, hallways and kiosk areas at work.
Does this also come with a padded reclining seat, a bright overhead light, and someone to tell you that you aren't flossing well enough?

If apple manufacture an articulated arm for the iMac and Cinema display, their concern would be there's nothing to stop somebody from using the arm on non-apple system.
Notice how at the display end, it's not vesa mount, hence the need for the VESA adaptor. Granted, there's nothing to prevent an arm manufacturer to make something work with that connection, apart from their market would be very, very small.
So apple could make their special arm that connects effortlessly to their products, which will be more "apple" than the vesa adaptor + 3rd party arms solution.
Oh and by the way, doesn any of you remember the TAM candidates? there's plaenty of arms ideas there.

The Cinema Displays are DVI and Apple has openly stated they will work with PCs just fine. We need to purge the "Apple doesn't like PCs" from our pysche. The iPod should change Apple's mind about selling products to PC. I think all their Consumer Electronic products should be as platform agnostic as possible. If Apple develops a nice articulated arm and they can profit from selling it to anyone with a VESA compatible monitor I say "do it".
Too bad you can't pivot the iMac into portrait mode. I wonder if the airflow woudl be seriously impacted by blowing east-west as opposed to south-north?
I know of an artist whose dying for a display that's big enough to show an upright poster. He'd pivot a 30" ACD if he had the funds. Pivoting an iMac would be perfect for him, but it screw with the cooling.
The box would have room for devices that would run off cables plugged into the back of the machine.
Modules I'd like to see would be:
TV tuner/Analog AV converter
hard drive bay
dvd-r bay
firewire/usb hub/compact flash etc
Audio amplifier (50 watts or so) - lets you plug real speakers in to the iMac
You could do all of this stuff with currently existing products, but the cable clutter would be annoying. My idea is to have a neat little box with an integrated arm to hold the iMac.
