I now have been experimenting with Open Office and it appears to do the job in Panther. I would rather not spend hundreds on MS Office when I'm not a power user that would require it. One question I do have though, has anyone heard about an Appleworks update? It seems that Appleworks has been ignored by Apple and I wouldn't mind the functionality limitations if it were free, but it's not. Anyone heard anything about a new Appleworks? Thanks in advance.
OpenOffice.org for X11 is okay, but what I use is NeoOffice/J (at www.neooffice.org). It's based on the OpenOffice source code (so it's free), except it runs on Java instead of X11. It uses native print dialog boxes and runs very well on my 550 Mhz TiBook (albeit a little slow starting up).

We've all been chanting for an Appleworks update for years. I love Appleworks.
BTW, it isn't free, but the education edition does only cost $29, which is about as close as you can get to free.

And also has a double clickable installer.
Hey i really would give it a try, but is it ... er ... stable enough for daily use? I'd appreciate honesty
Heck, i don't get that openoffice hype (aside that this is a non microsoft product) . Openoffice looks like any windows app. I don't like windows. For certain reasons
Though, I'd go so far: I HATE WINDOWS. THOROUGHLY.

It's as stable as any other program I've been using. But if you are overly concerned, use NeoOffice 0.8.4 instead of NeoOffice 1.1.2 Alpha 2.
As for the windows look, they're working on it (there are only 2 developers, they need some more man power!).

Ok, granted i was a wee bit harsh about openoffice, of course i appreciate every aspiring toward something NON M$ I just can't get used with something windowish on my pb. But as you've pointed out: it is just a temporal state, isn't it?
best
BTW: Anybody else using Final Draft for Macintosh? This app does the rock.

All they add is a price, and a pretty high one at that. I never liked those guys much.
