Hey guys, I'm getting ready to buy a 12" Powerbook to replace my old TiBook, and I'm wondering where are good places on the web to buy memory, so I don't have to pay the exorbitant prices from Apple. I know I need to buy good stuff (Samsung, Kingston, Viking maybe?) So, I'd be much appreciated if you'd give some suggestions.

    www.ramseeker.com

    www.dealram.com

Search for low prices. I have always had good luck with www.memorytogo.com. This time however, I just ordered from www.18004memory.com because their shipping was a little cheaper.

If you decide to buy cheap memory, please make sure that the company you buy from has a liberal return policy; just in case OS X decides that it's too cheap.

For myself, I always buy from Crucial. It's more expensive (but not by much), it is sent out immediately, the packaging is superb, and they have an excellent return policy; though returns are rare, since the memory is of such high quality.

They have good prices too. I am trying to decide between Mac Solutions and Crucial.

I was considering Ramjet but they are more expensive and they havent returned my email to them. I hate that!

Populating like rabbits, we get a new "where can I buy memory?" thread here on average every two to three weeks. Perhaps it's about time the powers-that-be post a sticky thread over in the Genius Bar about this. Or perhaps here in Current Hardware.

    Just my 2 bytes.

I've ordered exclusively from 18004memory.com for the last five years and they have been excellent! The quality of the memory is fantastic and their service is excellent.

The one time they did ship me the wrong ram they shipped the correct ram out immediately. Their customer service is excellent.

BTW, I don't work for them I'm just a happy customer.

Just checked their website. The memory config is incorrect about the standard amount of RAM in my machine and doesnt list the specs for their chip. Is it CL2 or CL3? etcetc

Its still between Crucial and MacSolutions right now for me.

The ram from 18004memory is CL3. I got two sticks of 512 for $71.50 each. (The 256 stick that I removed was also CL3 and someone traced the numbers on it as Crucial ram.) The memory that they sent me is the Princeton brand. I found some limited specs on the 512 chips by going to the Princeton Technologies website.

Get the 3200 400DDR that they have listed for the PowerMac G5 1.8-2.0. This is cheaper than buying the iMac memory and it is exactly the same thing.

My 20" iMac runs great now. I used it for a couple of days with base 256 ram. The difference is very noticeable.

I have a old iMac G3400DV. It makes me uneasy that their website seemed hastily thrown together without the proper specs or RAM info.

Crucial sells both CL2 and CL3 and it says so right next to the chip-I like that.

MacSolutions sells CL2 and again it mentions it right away.

Im a little anal about these things, I think its important for a website to be professional.

    Yeah Steve,

Their website is pretty weak and probably could scare you a little if you haven't used them before. They get good customer ratings however and they do fully guarantee their memory. Mine is working perfectly as far as I can tell by its performance.

You could also check out memorytogo which has nearly identical pricing. Their website is much better, they fully guarantee their memory for life. I have used them for all of my macs, which includes an iMac DVSE 400. They also get good customer ratings.

I was looking at price on this item. You may be looking for peace of mind. Both are good.

    Good luck to you.

    Hey guys.

I ordered the iMac G5 with 512 and I was wondering how much of speed difference going to 1 gig will make? Especially 'cause I've been reading about this 128bit thing by having identical dimms in there...

Where do I get an identical dimm that the iMac ships with? And will I notice a huge speed bump? I do a lot of design work with photoshop, dreamweaver, garage band, iPhoto, etc. I'll also be doing a little gaming (ordered Knights of the Old Republic w/ the iMac for kicks)...

    Thanks!

According to macbidouille, in 128 bit mode there is a 38% boost in memory test under Xbench (compared to 64 bit mode).

The 128 bit mode only work with two identical dimms, and even in this case, sometimes it don't work.

    Umm. . . www.newegg.com

Find the ones with a volume of good customer ratings. At that point, you can either buy from newegg or hit froogle with the model number. But newegg is usually really cheap.

Interesting, thanks. According to Randy Singer PC133's dont always work in older iMacs so I think I will stick to PC100 and decide between Other World Computing and MacSolutions, so Crucial is out because their PC100 is expensive.

As you can see, it takes me a lot of time to make up my mind!

    Thanks.

The website is one reason I didnt care for Newegg.com also as someone later mentions.

I think I am going to consider Otherworld Computing which is back in the running thanks to Randy Singer, and MacSolutions.

Now, if someone can come over here and smack me in the head so I can make up my mind it would be appreciated
