Apple Double RAM Offer Good For Portables But Maybe Not For PowerMacs
Apple Double RAM Offer Good For Portables But Maybe Not For PowerMacs.
Upon further investigation by reading the FINE PRINT in the Terms and Conditions:
"Additional RAM may be installed as either a single larger capacity replacement RAM DIMM chip or by adding additional RAM DIMM chip(s) as required, exact method to be determined at Apple's discretion."
Called the Apple Store 800-MY-APPLE line and got confirmation that Apple will use that loophole whenever it wants to and that we can't be assured that a 512MB double order will yield two 512 MB sticks every time. We can't even specify that is the only way we'll exercise that option.
So doubling 512MB PowerBooks to 1GB is great. And they let you bump a 256 MB iBook to 640 MB for only $40. So that's the best deal. But the PowerMac deal could show up with two extra 256 MB sticks instead of one more 512 MB stick. If you plan on never going above 1.5 GB, then fine. But for those of us who want to maximize the RAM to 2GB, it presents a little hastle to roll those smaller sticks over to someone else.

Its not like the ram from Apple is any better.
Its not like the ram from Apple is any better.
<strong>Big deal, go to any number of online Apple retailers and you can get 512mb of "free" ram, plus anything from a free printer to a 19" monitor when purchasing a Powermac.

Except that you don't get educational pricing from resellers. And they usually charge $40 anyway for 'installation' (what a crock of shit that is). Not too bad if you're not getting a computer with only 128 megs of ram.
ps - Matsu, you're going to be the Scott_H of a new generation if you don't get another tag line.

...... Now Apple seems to be competing with its own retailers.
Why does this not surprise me... Its a sure sign of how deep the she-ite Apple is in.... AND they dont do the promo in the UK (of course..)
When Apple raises prices, they're also in deep shit.
Nope, can't win.
Rebates are nothing new to Apple, HP, Dell, or any other PC makers.
From Dell:
"FREE PRINTER, DIGITAL CAMERA OR CD/MP3!"
"$100 OFF Instantly!"
"Simply "customize & price" ANY new Dimension? desktop and in the cart you will receive up to $150 OFF your total system order1!"
From HP/Compaq:
"$100 CASH BACK!"
"Save up to $100 on secondary drive when you configure a DVD-ROM in the primary bay if eligible desktop purchases."
"Get $150 cash-back with purchase of qualifying monitor."
Newsflash, the PC sector is very soft...HOLY SHIT!!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
Matsu = Troll
<strong>I don't think Matsu is trolling for posts. I think he's right, although Apple isn't the only PC maker who's desperate these days.</strong><hr></blockquote>
That is precisely what makes him a troll.
This isn't something new...It's a shtick, and a tired one at that.
Matsu never quits, especially when he's <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=10&t=002657" target="_blank">wrong</a>.

Okay, but is it wrong to go fishing a little now and then.

For the lowest models it's fair: extra 128 for 40 bucks. Not great, but considering Apple's usual RAm prices, not too far out of whack. And if you buy higher-end machines, then the deal gets better. An extra 256 for 40 bucks is pretty good, especially so when directly from a systems manufacturer. Then, if you buy higher end, an extra 512 for $40 is actually really good (even if it comes to you on two sticks).
Jeeze, even when I agree with something Apple does... I can't win! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
Christmas time is coming, and Apple has gone through xmas seasons without new product before, they do, however manage to cook up one incentive or another for the holidays. Right now we have LCD/PB-PM tie-in rebates and this RAM promo, and I think the Adobe promo too (or is it over yet) They're learning, albeit slowly. Throw in a printer, scanner and a swedish massage and I'm there.
For example, their 17" LCD Display is regularly priced at $999 but they offer a discount when you purchase it with a system. Well, Dell's 17" display (which uses the same LCD manufacturer as Apple and has better support for their products) is $699 - off the shelf any old day of the week. This week however, Dell is offering 15% off of that price to any home consumer.
So the choice is left to the consumer, black plastic casing or clear plastic casing? Same LCD, just a different case. Apple tends to think lucite is worth the $300+ premium. Sure, Apple doesn't have the high volume sales advantage to drop prices AS low - no one expects that. $799 should be their daily price for the 17" LCD.
Anyway, the point is that Apple's prices are completely out of line (which we all know and has been beaten to death) so silly little deals like this are ridiculous coming from a company which should be slashing prices to get 'switchers' to increase share. Instead, they rely on MacBots that will ignore their heinous support practices, ridiculous prices and poor performance offerings. The only thing I hate about being a Mac user is dealing with such people who can't see what is really going on!

Yes, the Dell 1702FP LCD has both VGA (blue) and DVI (white) connectors. They offer MANY other displays so you should take a look at the others as well.
Apple (along with Dell, Gateway, etc.) do not make the LCDs that they brand and sell. They all use the same leading LCD manufacturers and it's usually a random pick depending on current supply, etc. Some of the manufacturers they use are Samsung, Hitachi, Philips, LG, etc. They all purchase the LCDs from these companies (as well as others) and brand them as their own in their own packaging. You never really know which one you're going to get with your system which is why some FP iMacs will have different looking displays when sitting them side by side. Usually, 15" displays by any of these manufactures are of less quality in terms of vibrancy. The 17" LCDs are usually a better quality overall. We have a Dell 1702 LCD and an Apple 17" LCD (as well as others) at work in the Networking room. When you see them side by side viewing the same desktop - they are identical.
The point is, getting a good LCD display is somewhat of a gamble regardless who is selling it. Apple and Dell both use manufacturers who happen to make excellent LCDs when in the 17" to 21" market. However Apple may have one particular manufacturer set for their more odd sized displays, etc., but I am not sure.
