The recent announcements of iTunes/Fairplay licensing for mobile phones is PROOF POSITIVE that there will not be an Apple phone anywhere in the near future.

Even Apple wouldn't tick off their partners by announcing deals only to trump them with a competitive product.

I just want an Apple Media Center.

Why, oh why won't this topic just die. I understand cell phones suck and need Apple's magic, but how many times does Steve Jobs needs to say in public that there is no way Apple is going to do a cell phone before people believe him?

I heard him at the D Conference go through it again when an audience member asked him. He was adamant about it and had a half dozen reasons why it was stupid for Apple to get in that business, three of which were the crappy margins, selling to carriers who squeeze the hell out of you and have zero loyalty, and the fact that it would piss of the other manufacturers who would go out of their way to limit interoperability with the MacOS.

It's time for people to accept the basic facts:

    1. Apple does what Steve Jobs says.

    2. Steve Jobs is not doing a cell phone.

    3. Ergo, Apple is not doing a cell phone.

Voice over IP, or whatever arguments you want to make, is not going to change the fact that this is not going to happen. Accept it.

Before I ever considered an Apple (Hella Rock at Music Recording.Editing.Mastering) and the iMacs came out, with the iApps like iTunes, iPhotos, iLife...ect...I always thought they might rule the world. Jokingly, of course. Look at me now; I'm here.

I agree that Apple won't get involved with Cell phones... and I happen to agree with the above reasoning too, makes total sense.

However, there is room for 2 things

    1) A partnership with another phone maker

    2) a cordless phone in the home.

Cordless home phones are not subsidised by the carriers so Apple charges whatever they want. Apple has a home wireless network in place and there are no competing phones (on 802.11/Airport) made by any mainstream companies. (Whether or not Apple use the wireless network to a regular phone line, or do a full VoIP would be a separate question.)

This Nokia 6260 works and looks pretty cool, too. The design of the optional wireless keyboard brings a certain Bluetooth computer keyboard in mind...
