CF cards are the same size as the hard drive in the iPod mini. Going to flash would not make the iPod smaller. It might give it a little longer battery life.
No one said it'd use CompactFlash-cards, it will use flash memory and they come in a variety of different packages like the small secure digtal and memory stick. Flash memory is memory that will retain the stored data even if the power is cut, unlike the memory used in RAM.
