In my opinion, this has absolutely nothing to do with basketball or even sports in general.
This type of incident happens on a somewhat regular basis in all cultures all throughout history. I'm not saying that it is acceptable or that it should be ignored. Rather, let's put the brall in perspective.
There have been equally violent incidents at Barnes & Noble during book signings.
Equally as violent things happen at marching band competitions and dog shows... etc.
The point is, forget about them being basketball players. Just treat the fight like any other fight.
Some of you probably won't believe this and a few years ago I wouldn't have either, but its hard for me to imagine fans getting so out of hand and the reason why? All the major sporting events I go to are here in beautiful NYC. I almost never see fans acting stupid at Yankee, Rangers or Knicks games. Who'd a thunk?
Transplant this scene into any other location nationwide, (except another sports stadium)...and the police would have arrested and charged dozens with assault, battery and related offenses. Oh, wait...this is professional sports (oxymoron), with celebrities., so the law of the land doesn't necessarily apply.
1. Book signings? An author started beating up a customer? I doubt it.
2. Marching band competitions. Teenagers.
3. Dog shows. Really? A dog owner attacked a member of the audience? I doubt this as well.
Yes these are all true.
Even stranger things happen all the time. Remember the mom who killed a rival to get her daughter on the cheerleading squad? Or how about the Tonya Harding incidents?
Open up the paper any day and you'll find similar strange events... just not normally on national TV.
We will never completely eliminate fist fights and brawls. The best we can do is view them in historical context and punish the people involved. This brawl was nothing new!

I think we're loosing site of why people are so up in arms with this event, which is that these so-called professionals need to show some sort of restraint and not jump into the stands swinging because some moron throws a cup with a little beer in it their way. Its a damn shame that we allow these athletes to hover above the law and under extreme circumstances like this it is that much worse. We arent talking about a speeding ticket that these guys are getting out of but rather an assault and battery on national television (I know the guy who threw the beer started it and his ass should go to jail first).
MTV has a really funny cartoon skit that plays every so often that I think is called life from a celebrity's perspective. In the cartoon they compare a regular persons life to a celebrity's. The last part shows the celebrity getting a not guilty verdict in court while the the average joe gets guilty. This is so true.
