I just installed a gigaworks dual 7457 1.1G G4 to replace my dual450 duaghter card. This upgrade comes with two fans which could wake the dead! I think they are about 50mm in size by about 10mm thick.
All of a sudden the leaf-blower G4s and cheese-grater G5 cases make a whole lot of sense. With all this noise you'd think the case would run cool. Except these G4s have only a single 80mm exhaust fan, located in the power supply. The heat coming out of it feels like a hairdryer on high.
Having helped a friend set up liquid cooling on his PC, I'm thinking about going that route. I could then disconnect the 120mm intake and eliminate the two CPU fans. But perhaps I would still need an additional fan on the radiator.
Glad to hear it. I seem to remember reading posts from some, that there might be a thermostat (or other) problem with some of the towers that makes the fans run more than necessary. Do you think that could have been part of your problem, or was it just the higher speed processors causing all the fan noise?
we tried most anything to solve the noise problem. Any suggestions you may have read on the net we tried, but to no avail. I then got a new machine and again tried everything. I'm glad I switched to a dual 2.0 - much happier now

that was a pretty big performance hit to take for a few decibels.
A few decibels?!?! Yeah, right, you obviously didn't hear my machine(s). Even opening a few tabs in Safari would make the dual 2.5 sound like a jet-engine taking off. That's not just a few decibel. I had to run the machine at reduced speed to make the noise level acceptable - the performance hit compared to that is not all that bad really! Rights now my dual 2.0 running at full speed is way more quiet than a dual 2.5 at reduced speed, plus the cpu remains a lot cooler as wel.
Ever get annoyed by the sound of a vacuum cleaner? That's how I feel when I have to use a noisy computer. I completely understand macanoid wanting to swap out that machine.
I seriously doubt Apple will be able to create a G5 PowerBook that's as quiet as the G4s. For that reason (and the hot legs issue) I doubt I'll ever buy one. Hopefully one of these days, we'll be able to get speed without all the heat.
Has anyone tried the single processor 1.8ghz G5 PowerMac? I know that it is the low end option but you would have to think that it would be the easiest to cool.

Right, but you see acoustics are part of that "total package" Apple is catering to. Otherwise who the hell would by a Mac? If you want power and care little of anything else there are PCs. Macs are represent an effort to give you power with focus; enhanced user experience, hardware that works with you and not against.
Apple has been guilty of over-clocking previous generation Power Macs to get the specs they desire. And I'm taking a wild guess it occurred this time with the "2.5 GHz" Power Macs.
If your a power-hungry Mac users and don't care about noise, thats fine. But I doubt your the majority or anything close to it.
(Sorry in advance ipodandimac, but I'm fed up with people who don't care about acoustics, this includes Apple. )

I've read on Apple Discussions that they are much quieter then the rest of the line. But try and look for others opinions on other boards.
For what it's worth, my Dual 1.8 Rev. B at work is whisper quiet, but it does suffer from the "eeep-eeep-eeep" noise.
I've had both machines home running in the same room and the difference between the Rev. A and the Rev. B is like night and day.
In the end I chose the loud fans and the 8 DIMMs slots over "Sir-Eeeps-A-Lot" and the 4 DIMM slots.
So the fans on the Rev. Bs are quieter, and as soon as they get the eeeping noise sorted they'll finally have the computer that they've been advertising for the last 18 months...

Down with fan noise!
