No extended warranty for Wyoming iPod buyers

Consumers in Wyoming seeking an extended warranty for their iPod or Macintosh computer are politely being turned down and asked to phone Apple for more information in the coming weeks.

According to a company bulletin, the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) for iPods or other Apple products may not currently be sold to consumers in the state of Wyoming. This restriction--apparently enforced by the State--will be lifted when Wyoming approves Apple's application to sell APP to consumers in Wyoming.

Normally Apple sells APP only for products that are still in warranty, but says that will grant exceptions to consumers in Wyoming whose warranties expire before Apple can sell APP to them.

"Having confirmed that your customer is not an education or business customer, explain that APP for the customer's product currently cannot be sold," the company explains in a memo. "Apologize for the inconvenience and ask the customer to call Apple in a few weeks."

The current restriction applies only to "consumers" in Wyoming and does not apply to education institutions, education individuals, or business customers.

i think you cannot buy the APP in florida, either, but for different reasons. i'm not sure what happens if you buy your APP in another state and then move to florida.

This is a real shame... I'm not about to drop 2.5k on a laptop that will only have a 1yr warranty. Oh well, hopefully soon this will change. I wasn't going to buy until after jan10 anyway
