(I think I maybe rather partial to being called "lass". "Lassie" even. Huge improvement on tonton's "doll". )

Sister Marilyn was a very enlightened and inspiring English teacher. Despite being a nun, and the whole glass eye thing.

I'm a little surprised at the absence of LoTR apologists. I thought Spliney was going to be howled at and subject to much righteous indignation when this thread started.

Since nobody followed up on this, I just thought I'd provide some more material for you.

Tolkien was nothing but a anti-industrialist. And if your library is stocking obscure (at least for a sociologist) economical periodicals I´ll direct you to the final proof that "Alice in Wonderland" is nothing but a meta story about the abandoning of the gold standard as soon as I have been to the library myself.

The books were badly written and wandering. If I may risk my life on this statement, Jackson's direction and Weta Digital's effects made the movies worth so much more than the books.

That may very well be, but it's still very well written.

    Badly written ?

it's the first time that I read this statement.

Now some books can be perfectly written, and as boring as death. I know a few in french (I never suceed to read them)

I would venture a guess that you don't read much and that you watch too many bad movies.

Ha ha ha. I must agree. The books, I'd say, aren't badly written, but are written in a way that is unfamilar to past or present styles. The work was a linguistic project. In my opinion, it was fairly clever in that respect.

So Placebo, what kind of writing do you like? I ask because I consider myself a bit of a hobbyist in regard to writing, and am honestly interested in your opinion. Alternatively, you can give me a few examples of what you don't like, since I know its often easier to isolate the bad than the good.
