You will probably burn the most DVD-R's (or at least I have over 150 of them) then you will + R. Still though DVD+R speed is at 8X as well. I could be wrong but I believe DVD-R's are somewhere around the 95%ish compatability DVD players so that is what I generally use. It's up to you and your preferences though.

What I meant was, when they say "8x superdrive", what do they
mean? Is this the same drive that is in the more current mac minis,
So, I just burned a DVD-R to test the theory. When the burn speed dialog comes up, 8X is a grayed-out non-selectable option. So much for hoping my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835F might actually be an 8X drive. Oh well, my PowerBook only had a 2X drive so this will seem really fast. This is not to say I'm not bummed out that Apple screwed me for ordering my mini on the first day. \

iDave,
You might want to call Apple to be sure. I have heard that the 4x in the original specs was a typo and that all drives shipped were 8x. Not sure if this is true, but it won't hurt to call and verify.
You know, this is a real mess. The specs say it's 4x. The online store says it's 8x. Phone support says it's either 4x or 8x depending on who you speak with. Come on, this isn't brain surgery. Just how difficult would it be to clarify the situation? Get your act together Apple!

What application did you use? iDVD? I wonder if it really is an 8x drive but Apple crippled the speed in firmware so that it wouldn't outperform the iMac G5 or something. They have pulled crap like that before. According to Toast 6 Titanium it will indeed burn at 8x so it looks like Apple must have OS X set to ignore this or something. Lame.

good luck
Thanks for the encouraging words. I've already proven to myself that this is a 4X drive.
Calling Apple might just make me mad at someone and make a bad experience worse. This computer I bought that Steve Jobs said is quiet, is actually quite noisy. Two weeks later, it's somewhat obsolete because it has the 4X Superdrive, lowering its future resale value compared to other minis. I've owned lots of Macs and this is the first one I ever bought that has me depressed soon after the purchase.
I know; cry me a river, right? There are more important things in life. It's time to forget about it.
I hope everyone who ordered a mini before these price reductions has read their invoice. If price is cut within 10 days of shipping, Apple will make an adjustment. At least that is what I read on my invoice for Apple software. I assume it is the same for a Mac mini.
The prevailing sentiment is that the base models do indeed have 5400 rpm drives which makes me very happy since I have that model. Not that it matters all that much since I use an external drive for music production.

Um, well, that page says UJ-835B, not F. I can't seem to find anything on the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835F which is what my mini has in it.
