Posted:
in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
I was just looking at the Apple Education Store (Higher-Ed), and the price was changed from $1499 to $1699!

ARRGGHHHH!!!! I hope this is a mistake (If not I should have bought it already!!!)

Can anyone else confirm this?

Man.... this sucks... My school is at 1699

I was planning on getting one of these before summer... This puts a little damper on that...

Man, 1500 is a great deal for that. 300 off. Impressive. The specs are not any lower correct?

Well... I just called the store, and the guy on the phone said that the price was NEVER 1499. He said "I look at it everyday and it has always been 1699"

So I expect that all the 4's are soon going to be 6's.....

Yeah, 1500 is a great price, almost as good as the ADC pricing, which is just a little cheaper.

UofM has good prices that I'm not sure I can get. Plus I already put the order in at <a href="http://www.smalldogs.com"; target="_blank">Small Dog. They haven't updated yet and I got email today that they don't have prices yet.

I think you all are confusing the "Shop for yourself" and "Shop for your school" pricing. One is for you and the other isn't.

Apple had different pricing for departments and people. People pay more departments pay less.

I realize I have no way to prove this, but I know I was looking at the same pricing level (for "people" as opposed to departments) and the price jumped.

The info was changed while I was looking at the specs for the 12" PB. When I was on the main powebooks spec page (showing the prices for all models), the price was 1499, then when I clicked on the 12", the next page had 1699. I think I just happed to be looking when it was changed.

Apple redesigned the entrance to the Edu Store page a few weeks ago and the departmental and personal sections flipped sides. I think some people just got conditioned to clicking left or right without really looking at where there were going.

I don't believe the pages are customized per school. They all show the same prices online though some schools actually will sell the systems to students at departmental prices. I know both Harvard and Stanford pass on the departmental prices to students (going to the online stores for both schools at Apple.com doesn't reflect this though.)

If you do not like your pricing there is an obvious obvious thing to do:

    change schools

Eugene gets it exactly right. People are (inadvertently) confusing the "for yourself" and "for your school" options because of the site redesign and thus getting different prices. Beyond that, many schools pass on the lower institutional prices to their students, provided that they buy through the school (not online directly from Apple).

My school has sucky Mac support. So getting the school to order a new PowerBook at the institutional price on my behalf is like reinventing the wheel. So far they haven't even understood my request. If they do, I think I'll order a 12" PowerBook now. If they don't, I'll hold off for Rev.B with 1Ghz/1GB.

Yes. People are shopping for their school instead of shopping for themselves.

School pricing is always lower than individual pricing.

ok, so i am an idiot....of course my department would buy it for me cuz they love me so.....so i will wait for rev b also and just keep going to the "wrong" door to find the price then have my dept do a P.O.....g

actually, prices are different on a per school basis.

the first is for departmental purchases, the second for personal.
