Super Bowl



Just after half time during break



Napster....... Puts up an Ad showing Apple/ iPod....... Trying to say that it would take $10,000 to fill an iPod that can hold 10,000 songs





I think its going to do them more harm than good showing an iPod .... but nice try

    I own and iPod and use the iTunes Music Store, but I don't see how that commercial would do more harm than good. To many it provides a good point.

    For everything that Apple has done right, I'm still surprised that they don't have a real answer for the $10,000 question.



    I'm still on the fence with the whole own vs. "rent"/streaming i think both are good. I just wish Apple would give us some options.

    until napster users want to end their subscription and lose all that money. apple should have one that shows the cost of napster after 5 years, and how you totally lose your music if you end the subscription.

    First lesson of competitive advertising: don't show off the competitor's product!



    BTW, The Register saved us the trouble of figuring out this subscription scam. All the Yahoos, Napsters, Microsofts and whoever else all say the same thing at the end of the day: subscription models are better for them.



    Apple can counter with one of their typical ads, with two words tagged on near the end: "Yours Forever."

    The average person is smart enough to know that you can download free music. When they see this ad, they will see the iPod and think "man, that is a cool looking player, and it must have a lot of space for my internet songs if you can fit $10K of legal music on it".

    just watched the one at the end of the super bowl where they claim that napster is the worlds first online subscription service. Are they on crack? Online subscription services have been around for like 7 years!

    $10,000 to fill an iPod?

    That's a joke. I have several hundred CDs that I've bought and can freely rip into iTunes and load onto my iPod.



    As Steve has said, subscription services don't work.

    When you stop paying that $15 a month, your music is gone, not playable, poof! That's a bunch of BS.



    Napster will die. Buy into it if you want.

    The best was when they were coming back from one a set of commercials and they had series of "sponsored by" lines, and one was "and sponsored by napster, the most well known/dominant brand in digital music" or something like that.



    I bursted out laughing.



    Anyone remember the exact line?

    I think napster was walking a fine line of legality last night: blatently false or obviously misleading claims in ads is a no no...

    Maybe apple should sue them, and all the Napster half-truths and lies would be published by cnn in an editorial...



    Plus, Apple would have no trouble sinking Napster via legal fees - not that I endorse Microsoft like tactics.

    IMO the only ads I see that are halfway interesting are funny and/or informative. Both kinds are few and far between. I never see anything funny on TV, sometimes in the movies. The most common kind of genuinely informative ad is the one where your product and your *best* competitors are placed beside each other and you show how yours is better.



    It doesn't sound like Napster can really utilize this ad genre.. since the facts are against them.

    At least they didn't go for the most pathetic option and compare themselves to someone weaker than Apple.

    I'll use Napster once there's an easy software hack that will painlessly and automatically record all of your Napster-provided music into AAC files, so then you can have an all-you-can-eat download frenzy, and cancel the next day.

    The problem with renting your music that goes beyond simply paying the monthly fee is this.



    Say I have a CD player in my car and a DVD player at home that of course plays CDs as well.



    My children have various boomboxes and the like for taking their music "on the road"



    How does Napsters "all you can eat" scenario benefit me? Basically I have to buy a "Plays for sure" device for EVERY scenario I want.



    With iTunes I can burn my playlists multiple times. I can back up my media.



    The $10,000 song myth is just that. I don't know a person out there that has 10k songs they really would pay a buck for each. The music industry is good but it ain't THAT good.



    Napsters marketing is pathetic. Apples counter should be simply showing someone burning a CD and sliding the CD into their car stereo, then the flipside would be the Napster person attempting to burn a CD and getting the resulting error. Nice and simply and it highlights the problem with renting your music. It's on "their" terms...not yours.

    Napsters all-you-can eat downloads could open the flood doors for a new wave of music piracy. It's fairly easy to make an unprotected audio duplicate once you have the file in your possession(rented or not) Enterprising folks could in theory, rent napster's whole catalogue and over the process of a month or two, have it all reconverted to something that can be redistributed. Yes, quality might take a hit, but, the opportunity is just staring them in the face.
