We're not talking about playing games here just the desktop.

You already got blasted for that, but here goes.

Compared to my last Powerbook, my iBook lags in Expose, even on the internal screen. Should they stop selling the iBook? Should they put a warning sticker on: "Does not work"?

Fluider Expose cost me 600EUR more. I'm ecstatic to have the one that doesn't "perform properly".

Why does Apple wait for people to complain when they could easily put a disclaimer about not enough memory or too large a video display?

Why are you the only one complaining?

I have a new Mac Mini & 23' cinema display and I could not be more pleased with the performance of each (together). Of course, at some point in the future, I will upgrade my Mini--as cpu's progress to G5s or Cells--but my 23' display will satisfy me forever. The Mini will go to the kids and I'll get the 'Cell Mini' and hook it up to my 23' cinema deplay and go on. It's not a bad strategy for me. Despite the pundit's criticism, there is no reasonable issue here.

Thanks jiggy05. Pleased to hear that you are happy with this combination. My plan was kind of similar to yours; get av realy big screen and a cheap computer, and then give the mini over to the kids when something better arrived

I have a question that is vital to my soon-to-be investment: How does av DVD play on your 23" when hooked up to the Mini? And what resolution do you recomend using with this set-up?

Is that just a sneaky way of saying you will keep the 23" screen and the Playstation3 to yourself and the kids will have to make do with the Mac?

DVDs play fine on my Mini and cinema display, though I wish Apple had a better interface for its player--for bookmarking, etc. For me, viewing two pages of a document at once is a lot more 'vital' than watching DVDs. When I did watch a movie, it performed smoothly and overwhelmed me at first. 23' of action less than a meter away is awesome. Invest in the RAM to meet your needs and enjoy. I switch resolution according to the task, but always 'stretched' for wide screen mode. And you WILL need decent external speakers as the Mini just has a tinny thing in the back that doesn't match the visual experience at all. Luckily, I have old JBLs that blow up the room.

You people are just too sold on the hype to see the reality with a clear head. I played with the mini and a 23" screen and I tell you I agree with the lag others have complained about. Don't believe me or the others. It's your money not mine.

Finally, Apple really is pulling a fast one here with the configuration of the mini and it's puny Radeon 9200 with 32MB! Don't believe me but wait till the mass of people that buy the mini decide to upgrade to Tiger the boards will light up with complaints. I was going to buy a mini but will only do so if I accept the fact it'll only run Panther. Apple should upgrade this Cube-wannabe computer with some serious GPU ASAP.

I own a 23" Cinema hooked up to a mini. DVD play is wonderful. I see no problem with Exposé either unless I have lots of window open. I don't play games so can't speak to that. Transitions between high resolution desktop pictures is a little choppy but not an issue, for me.

The 23" Cinema is definitely supported by the mini. Would a 64MB GPU be better? Sure.

To echo Gon's comment, I like a big screen, and place a higher priority on that than a fast computer. The mini is more than enough to suit my needs. This combination is great. Should I get a Power Mac and a 15" screen for the same total amount? Never!
