Solution to banner and pop-up blocking on AI and around the net: (just the nasty ones that trash Firefox and camino)
In your router configuration, run URL filtering, block any
URLs containing any of the following:
fastclick.
valueclick.
doubleclick.
This will block all domains, .com, .net and so on.
It aint pretty, it is a little under handed, but damn if it doesnt work.
these are just the biggies: I have a list of about ~12 other sites, I am not giveing those up because I do not want the advertisers to change their domains.
well. right after I installed 10.3.8 the pop up appeared in safari.
That's definitely the upgrade's fault.
I hope Apple will fix it in the next revision.
I had noticed this topic, but didn't click on it. I'd never gotten one using Safari. Well, I'll be damned if I didn't just get my first one. (I feel dirty.) Right here on AI. I had to double check that blocking pop-ups was turned on, and it was.
Bastards.
All of a sudden I felt like I was using IE again. <Shiver>
Anyway, I'm still using 10.3.7. I don't think it's the upgrade's fault. I just think the people who create these things are figuring out the loopholes.
"These rules are just like the rules of any computer program. Some can be bent. Some can be broken." - Morpheus.
(Except that Morpheus is cool, and the scum who create pop-ups, or more importantly the scum who pay them to do it, deserve to be strapped down and have bamboo splinters shoved underneath their fingernails as their feet are placed in high-powered smoothie blenders (set to frappe) while listening to John Ashcroft sing.)
Yes, please see the thread in Suggestions. And please, if you can, get the URL of the offending ad. It's much easier to filter out a known offender than to just know that there's some ad out there that spawns a pop-under.
