I know new Power Macs are out but the low end 1Ghz is not better than the Dual 867Mhz as it is a single G4...sure it is a at 1Ghz but no way faster than a dual 867Mhz ...so for those that say wow look at the price i say look at what your getting .....

Boy am i happy that i got this mac when i did!!!!!

And i thought that it would be a sad day when these mac where updated....not for me!!!! <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" /> <img src="graemlins/cancer.gif" border="0" alt="[cancer]" />

1GHz model should be faster than dual 867MHz model until programs support dual processors.

If your a OS 9 guy sure...but if your a OS X user like most people are with new macs...nope the duals are allways going to be faster...it's got the same bus and same ram....so it's still not faster

Strat...sorry to tell you, but in many ways you're wrong. A dual will feel faster in almost everyway, unless you are just taking stats for a single proccess. Who does one thing at a time anymore? If you still only do one thing..go back to using OS 9

I'm happy. My Dual 1GHz (MDD) will sell better

I'm glad I got my dual-867 too. I almost brought up my cornflakes this morning when I saw the price of the 1GHz, until I realized it was a single. I won't go back to a single for my work box. I think the Finder itself is now multithreaded in OS X; I seem to remember mention of that with 10.2.

It always amuses me how future purchasers are happy when Apple gives good upgrades and past purchasers are happy when they don't.

I bought the original Dual Ghz and it's been great, plus held good value because of the slow upgrades

At least the SlowSilver(tm) is quieter

Well, i'm sad. I've sold lots of 867 dualies, CTO'd with SCSI drives and X Server, as bottom-end servers, since Apple only offered the Dual 1GHz as a standard. Guess they found out.

    I agree 1000%.

Apple should have released a low end dual 1GHz machine instead of this lame single 1Ghz machine. I may even search around and pick up a dual 867 on clearance. You can overclock them to 1GHz...

I'm glad to have brough a dual 867 MHz ! It was the best decision I could take, few months ago.

I, too, was under the feeling the low end 1 GHz was a very good upgrade, until I realised it's a single processor only.

Interesting downgrade from Apple, mebbe at 1299, at 1499 it's just too much. Yesterday 200 more bought you over 70% more computing power than it does today. Stupid.

anything that costs 1500USD using dirt cheap PPC parts and NOT including a monitor should be at LEAST a DUAL.

If its quieter it worth it to me. I think Apple should def have a single processor low end model, but why the F is it only $200 cheaper than the previous dual 867?

Apple just can;t get the pricing right-the tower should have been $1199, then sales would boom.

As it is I will wait till the next model comes out and the price of this one to drop......................

Not for me. If I update to the Supredrive its barely less than the PB12.

I want the portability of the powerbooks this time.

For those just starting out, though, it's a nice upgradable starter like the first B&W. What I would like to know is if iDVD will work if you just install one of the pioneer Superdrives, or if it has to be an apple-authorized build-to-order.

(And yes, I know there are significant upgrades to memory, Firewire & graphics, but what price do you put on portabilty?)

This was mentioned in another post by someone else, but I figured I would say it anyways. I agree the single 1Ghz is pretty cheese for the price, but how do you figure you got a great deal with your dual 867? (depending when you bought it of course)

I can now buy a dual 1.25Ghz machine with a faster bus, faster RAM, 20GB more HD space, & 32MB more VRAM, for $500 CAD more than the dual 867 sold for, but I can also purchase a 17" studio display for $500 CAD less. And this includes Firewire 800, and Airport Extreme & Bluetooth compatibility. Also, the cases are supposedly far less noisy than the previous models.

I'd say in this respect, I'm getting the far better deal.

I suppose Apple has conveniently skirted around the dual 867's price point. $1500 for the low end, which is worse, and $2000 for the high end, which is quite a bit better.

Dual 867s are now going for $1500 used, I'd get one of those if you are looking at the single GHz. It has 32 MB less VRAM, and a 20 GB smaller standard hard drive, but those are minor sacrifices considering you'd be getting a second processor. I swear, the dual 500 MHz G4 I no longer have was super fast, about as good as my 800 MHz iBook but it didn't slow down as quickly when doing multiple things at once. I can't imagine how fast the faster dualies would be... the 800 MHz and faster dualies must absolutely SCREAM. Especially that 1.42 GHz one... w007!

A friend of mine got himself a dual 867 in late December, which he is now selling... so if you are interested, you can PM me and I'll hook you up with him. It's stock except for an extra 256 MB of RAM.

The dual G4 500's were almost as fast as a G3 800? Should I be impressed?
