this kind of stuff cracks me up. when belkin came out with their reader, everyone was pissed cause it required batteries, and wondered why the power couldnt be provided by the ipod. now apple comes out with a small, nice, self-powered adapter and people are pissed cause their ipods b-life will be short. this is exactly what will happen if an ipod supports video too.
I will be happy if it turns out that new Apple device can work with non-Photo iPods. I obviously don't mean so that i can view the photos on the iPod, just use it as on the road storage. The belkin camera-connection device is nice, but way to0 expensive. It sells for about $140 Canadian. The Belkin card-read sells for $100 Canadian. The Apple device should convert to about $40~45 Canadian, which makes it much more attractive.

I really don't know much about the Apple device. Has anyone even seen a picture of it or read a real set of specs? I don't think so, but I'd like to.
The Belkin device is flawed. It uses USB 1.1, NOT FireWire AND it must be connected directly to a camera, so that while you're downloading photos, the camera needs to be on, draining the batteries.
If you've ever used a USB 1.1 card reader with a large memory card... 256MB or more... it takes a very long time to download the photos, even with high speed cards. The battery life of most rechargeable batteries is short. Why use a device that drains the batteries of TWO devices? It makes no sense.
Clearly, if you take photos or listen to an ipod where electrical power is readily available, then none of this is an issue. If you've ever been on trips where there is NO power for a few days or even a very long day of shooting, then draining batteries needlessly is a BIG issue.
The ideal would be some kind of compact, self-powered, device with a PC Card slot that lets you use numerous card formats. Ideally it would have a built-in iPod dock or multiple interfaces, FireWire AND USB 2. AND yes, if it couls recharge iPod batteries, that would be a bonus.

Man, follow the links above and stop bitching. Belkin DOES MAKE a card-reader->iPod device, it IS self-powered, it DOES reads 5 media card types AND USES FIREWIRE...
Not sure how many times you need it shoved in your face. You keep bitching about it not existing, when it doesn in fact exist.
And as far as seeing Apple's device: goto Appleinsider.com, it's an Apple related rumor site. They have what may be a picture of the Apple device now.
Additional: Just to be repeatitive, since the point seems to keep being missed:
From Belkins site: Media Reader for iPod w/ Dock Connector
Transfers digital photos via FireWire at 300KBps
Supports CompactFlash® (Type 1 and 2), SmartMedia?, Secure Digital (SD), Memory Stick®, or MultiMediaCard (MMC)

Okay. I stand corrected. I must have missed the release of this thing. There's just too much stuff out there to be able to keep track of all of it. maybe post a link first next time.
Belkin's media reader is FireWire, but it does not have FireWire speed. Only USB 1.1 speed--note 300KBps. And it has received nothing but crap user reviews since its release some time ago due to this inconsistency.
I have their Digital Camera Link. It works better, a bit faster.

That's too bad. The speed problem sounds familiar. I think I've pretty much written off Belkin products... I've bought a few with less than stellar results.
I guess I'll stick with my Minds@Work MindStor card reader hard drive unit. It's clunky, but works. I could swap out the 10GB hard drive for a bigger one, if I needed to. It's not bad... it uses a PC Card slot, runs on battery or AC/DC power, has FireWire and USB 1.1 ports. I've used it in Bulgaria, Germany, Turkey, Belize, Guatemala and the various spots in the Caribbean with no trouble.

This is why I think I will look at Apple's device. If it is able to work with a non photo iPod, then the price is right. I am willing to trade off it using the iPod battery for size and price.
To make this Belkin device interface clear once and for all:
It uses USB 1.1 to connect the Camera Link device to the camera AND FireWire to connect the device to the iPod. I planned to by this device. All reports suggest that it is VERY slow and eats batteries. The upload times reported are 2x - 4x SLOWER than over USB port on the keyboard (USB 1.1). I was prepared to swallow this (unusable on the field, good enough to upload overnight). Now I will wait for the Apple Camera Link.
