Why place a store in Helena, Montana or Bismarck, North Dakota and loose money for years with the small customer base when they can make money selling products in the major urban areas?
Bismarck is about 6 times larger than Pierre, South Dakota. (Not that I would recommend a store in either location.)
I'm originally from ABQ and when I went to visit my family in January, right around the time of Macworld SF, I could not find any freaking Apple merchandise anywhere! It took me two days of calling around, surfing the net, and driving to every retail store in a 50 mile radius to finally find the one Apple reseller with a copy of iLife '05 and iWork. \
Best location in the city would be downtown, near the University. Or maybe buy up the Lobo Theatre, since it never seems to stay open for very long. (Guess that might not bode well for an Apple store...)
BTW, Austin could use another store that isn't so far south. Like in the Arboretum.

I've always understood Albuquerque to be a place that seemed tailored to welcome Apple products. Could be ripe for a store soon.
As to Austin, we really haven't been seeing second stores in metro areas of its size yet, with the exception of West Palm Beach-Boca Raton. However, that area is so close to Miami it qualifies as a special case. The second stores coming to Orlando and Raleigh/Durham maybe a harbinger of moves in that direction.
Apple has put second stores in larger (2 million plus) metro areas this year. Portland and Pittsburgh are examples of this; with poor old Cleveland the only two million plus metro area with only one store.
