Skype wont launch - fresh install

Posted:
in Genius Bar edited January 2014
I just downloaded Skype to my G5 10.3.6

I opened the dmg and then dragged the icon into my applications folder, as instructed.

Now, the green icon appears there in the applications,

however, when I click it, Skype won't launch.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

You guys think it has to do with the fact that I can't find a mic and so I used an old headset as a makeshift microphone, and it sensed what I did? I figured it would work.. they work the same way basically..

thanks in advance for any suggestions

Well, it is difficult to find an answer remotely. At first

sight i would give "Repairing permissions" a chance.

To do so: launch disk utility from the utility folder, which is

    placed in the application folder.

OK, thanks a lot for your reply.

It's running the verify permissions now. When thats done, I will repair disk permissions.

Correct me if I'm wrong but by then I will be done with it most likely.

Appreciate the advice and any more is greatly appreciated.

When it finished running the verify disk permissions,

it's showing me a few sets where the permissions differ from what they should be.

None of whats mentioned relates to Skype.

Should I continue with the repair disk permissions anyway?

Most of what its saying is just relating to printer utility frameworks.. nothing extremely important imho.

The computer is pretty vanilla and I'm sure I cant be the only one with this issue with Skype.

What's the next level of troubleshooting this great community could tip me off with?

    tq very much

I assume you are running the latest vers. of

    Skype, which is ~ 1.0.0.18?

Can you provide more information about

your system? Is anything else running smooth?

perhaps (rarely) the downloaded Skype .dmg file

got broken. download a new one, see what happen.

perhaps some cache files got broken. put all local

and system cache to the bin.

there are some system maintenance scripts, - later...

    good morning anyway

    Mornin Barbara

    ok..

    Permissions repair complete.

Yes, thats the version of Skype I have.

    It's 7,085,552 bytes.

I will re-download and see if that helps. Good idea.. tho extremely unlikely.. still a chance. So I will try that now.

Everything else works on the computer. Or at least I think.. but no signs of anything unusual. What other info about the system would help diagnose this?

When I click the Skype icon in the applications folder, the dock at the bottom of the screen twitches for a second, it tries to make room for the new icon, what happens is two icons towards the right of the bar seperate from each other as if the new icon is about to appear between them, they get a few pixels apart, then they just stick back together the way they were.

As for putting all local and system files to the bin, that sounds good. However, I'm not so sure how to do that.

Would you be so kind as to give some more info.. baby steps me into it?

About to download the fresh dmg now and see how that goes.. but wait - looks like they updated the dmg today to 1.0.0.24

thanks for the assistance, lets see what happens

    sorry to hear that.

Well. Assuming your HD is in good shape

    i'd do the following:

    1. (easy one)

Clean local cache and trash the pref files.

how to: (a) select "Home folder", select "Library", drag

the entire "cache" folder to the bin. log out and in.

    see what happens.

Next: put the Skype preferences to the bin.

how to: go to finder, search for (CMD-F)

    "com.skype.skype.plist", you'll get two files

in the result window. Put both of them to the bin.

log out and in. see what happens.

If Skype still doesn't work, then:

    2. Create a new user with admin privileges

how to: go to system prefs, click "user", create new one.

log in "new user". see what happens. If skype doesn't launch

as suggested, it must be *something* systemwide.

Hence, go to the top level "Library", look for a

folder called "Caches". Drag the entire folder to the bin.

Reboot. Can take a while, because all needed cache

is gonna rebuild. see what happens.

    3. There are some maintanance scripts available,

which the Mac OS performs over night, but only

if your Mac is running over night of course. To run these

scripts manually, open "terminal.app" and type in

    exactly

    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly

    , hit enter.

You gonna asked for Admin password, do so.

Takes a while, there will be no status/process bar, don't worry.

The operation is finished, if you see the

    "localhost:~ yourshortname$" again.

This is off top of my head, hope that helps a bit.

If all this doesn't help, there could also be a

(granted pretty unlikely) conflict between Skype

and another app. Do you run ...er... exotic apps

    on your vanilla?

    Well.. couple of things.

Now that I repaired the permissions as suggested, Chess will not launch. Chess was one of the items whose permissions were reparied. It's telling me that it cannot launch because it is damaged or incomplete. No big deal, not that much of a chess user, but a woe nevertheless. (anyone know how to fix it?)

I did everything you suggested (except for the maint. script, which is about to be fired up) and it still won't work.

Once I did all that, tried to launch Skype, instead of the dock attempting to make room for the icon, the icon flashed there for a split second, then disappeared. So still no go. But it got me a split second further into having it fire up. (lol?) However, if we try to launch it again, its acting like it did before. The icon flashing in the dock happened once, and cannot be recreated. What it is doing now, is attempting to make room for it as before.. and then it dies peacefully.

When doing your suggestions, I deleted the caches as suggested, maybe I should have just deleted the contents of the folder as opposed to the folder itself, as now I just ran the disk permission utility again and all the recreated folders have incorrect permissions. So, I just fixed them.

I'll now try your maintenance script suggestion and see what happens.

As for the toppings on the vanilla,

I have VNCViewer, Opera, Cyberduck FTP, Mozilla, and that's pretty much it ATM. The VNC app would be the most exotic.. but, well.. I'm inclined to think that bundle isnt conflicting. I may be wrong.. but.. what do you think?

Any other suggestions while I run this maintenance script?

    I will report back.

    10x for the help, Barb.

    ...still considering...

What about that particular "new user" option? You didn't mention

    that one.

    Ahh sorry wasnt too clear.

"I did everything you suggested (except for the maint. script, which is about to be fired up) and it still won't work."

Tried that too, same thing, same symptoms..

We finished the sudo periodic daily weekly monthly..

    still no go

Woehoe. Hm, well. End of story.

    By no stretching my imagination...

It is very difficult to find a path. Perhaps another shot.

Perhaps it is related, perhaps not. Anyway, it is pretty safe

    to reset the Parameter ram.

    To do so

    -->reboot, and

    hold down "CMD + ALT + P + R" immediately when the

shutdown process is finished. Hold down the keys

untill the computer reboots again. Release.

Another thing. Maybe there has been a *slight* file corruption

    occurred. Perform a filecheck.

    To do so

    -->reboot, and

hold down "CMD + S". White text on black background will appear.

If the text movement comes to a halt type in exactly

    fsck -y

or, if your computer filesystem is journaled (it is journaled by default)

    fsck -f

hit enter, "filecheck" starts to perform. You will read, if the process is finished. Repeat it, untill the computer tells you "the computer seems to be ok" (literally) Then you have to type "reboot" (recommended). The computer

    reboots.

    See what happens. Good luck.
  • Reply 14 of 22
    Thanks for the instructions.

    Did all that,

it was journaled, .. completed and everything was ok.

No good came out of it, Skype still just hints at launching but wont fire up.

And, still no Chess.. same error. (no big deal..I can live without it.. but sucks that this broke too.. still, we can focus on Skype for now)

reread your post. "fdisk" is what?

Btw, in your particular case i would launch Skype

    everytime you'd installed another app.

Just to see if skype is still working.

    cheers
