Absolutely, and it's an extremely smart thing to do.

I can say for a fact that Apple putting Windows domain login support into 10.3 gave Macs in a lab here on campus (not mine, someone else's) a brief reprieve as Dells sweep the campus. 6 new iMacs instead of 6 new (cheaper & faster) little Dells.

Apple would be wise to tie as closely into Windows as it can.

For content's sake, I wonder where the negative prognostication over Longhorn is coming from. Longhorn has been delayed a few times, but consider how long it took Apple to release a response to Windows 95. Really, they never did. Rhapsody/OS X was also delayed a few times, if I recall correctly, and that system was absolutely crucial. When you think of what sort of position Apple was in at the time of its search for a modern OS and how they've survived despite that fiasco, Microsoft's position seems fairly secure.

Don't worry too much about it. Groverat is a pretty irritible guy. He gets into a lot of rants, and really needs to chill out for a spell.

Let's not forget that Mac OS 10.0 also was not ANYTHING like it is today, and that was after all the delays.

I'm a complete Mac fan. I totally prefer Apple's products, but I'm at least willing to acknowledge that Apple has worked very hard to get where it is and still must work very hard to STAY where they are.

Microsoft has essentially sat back and let the money roll in for the last 4 or 5 years. I don't see Microsoft working really hard to keep Bill Gates the richest man in the world.

They've been very kind to keep supporting the Mac platform for Office. Adobe has been very kind to keep supporting the Mac platform for every single one of their products. Avid has been kind to keep supporting Macs for video editing.

Am I forgetting any other big players that could squash the Mac platform like a bug if they pulled their support?

Microsoft knows that Apple is no competitor, so they port their software to work in it. You don't see Office for Linux, do you? Neither do you see IE, or MSN Messenger, or VPC for Linux.

That's because they don't want to give the principal reason for owning a Windows-based PC [Office] away to the one they deem to be their competitor.

And it's not good to directly compete with the biggest guy if you're a company that needs to make money. You can get squashed by them very easily.
