Remind me never to have lunch with you and your co-workers...a car guy and sports fans?

Seriously, though. I don't get this love of cars that seems to be all over this thread (pun intended). What it is about them?

It's got to be more than that new car smell.

My car is this 300hp green and orange monster:

You can't really see it in the picture, but when it glistens in the sun, it is the most beautiful thing in any parking lot. Appriciation of beauty is part of it - you are appriciating the art of the automobile. Camera collecting is like this also, I used to love to gaze into the ocean of glass that was my 85mm/1.2 Canon manual lens.

It is also combination of the thrill of a powerful roaring engine that throws you forward, the finesse of the suspension as you fly around a corner, and the connection to the car that you feel when you manually shift gears.

    The machine of a dream

    Such a clean machine

    With the pistons a pumpin'

And the hub caps all gleam

    When I'm holdin' your wheel

All I hear is your gear

When my hand's on your grease gun

Oh it's like a disease son

I'm in love with my car

    Gotta feel for my automobile

Get a grip on my boy racer rollbar

Such a thrill when your radials squeal

Told my girl I'll have to forget her

Rather buy me a new carburetor

    So she made tracks sayin'

    This is the end now

    Cars don't talk back

They're just four wheeled friends now

    When I'm holdin your wheel

All I hear is your gear

    When I'm cruisin' in overdrive

Don't have to listen to no run of the mill talk jive

I'm in love with my car

    Gotta feel for my automobile

I'm in love with my car

Your 0-10 time is a big part of your 0-60 time, so soon the fastest cars will be gas hybrids (maybe a 300hp gas engine to power the rear wheels and a 100 hp electric engine on the front wheels).

Doesn't seem like that kind of hybrid would have an edge over regular gas 4WD's built for performance.

Or do you mean some performance cars will be hybrids when "regular" cars only have an electric motor?

I like cars, and I like performance cars, but I don't understand the fascination for off-the-line speed. I know launching takes skill, but nothing compared to performance driving.

No, they have a big advantage over regular gas cars. You know the 6000rpm clutch dumps during drag races? You no longer have to do that to get maximum torque.

Nothing, not the Enzo or anything else, will be able to compete 0-60.

So, the hybrid is more convenient.

I still totally fail to see how the hybrid has a higher traction limit than a regular 4WD, because that's what it comes down to once you have enough power to slip all four tires.

Most cars can't slip all 4 tires, and even if they can, because getting max torque at low speed is hard - I doubt that they are at the edge of traction during their entire acceleration. Because a hybrid would be so much easier to get max torque from, you could concentrate on maximum acceleration much more easily.

Also, the hybrid engine required to get sub 3-second 0-60 times is much smaller than the gas engine with the same performance specs, so you would end up with a lighter, more throwable car.

When it comes to performance, electric motors will always win that battle. They are much more efficient than are heat engines. But it seems to me like there are some gaps in the hybrid concept that don't matter much for normal driving, but do expose themselves in race driving. With that said, I am interested in the potential for purely electric race cars.

Not only would they be faster, but going to the races would be much more enjoyable. If any of you have ever been to an Indy or F1 race, you know what I mean. Nascar is not as loud.

Lastly, for what it's worth, I'm a car guy and a sports guy. Especially ice hockey and the first kind of football.
