Is it possible to Open / Re-Encode AVI Movies with QuickTime 7 Pro ... I just downloaded the new family guy and want to make it easier to distribute. I can just watich it in MPlayer
Your "avi" is probably a dvix variant, and you would need to find a QuickTime codec to use it thus.
Notice that there are a lot of mutually incompatible dvix variants, and programs like MPlayer and VLC are simply bundles of these degenerate codecs with a little glue to hold them together.
Far simpler than searching for endless Quicktime codecs.

look on versiontracker for the forty-two dvd ... um... app. it's called "forty-two" because, well, it's the answer to everything, really. it automatically finds and downloads every compatible codec to quicktime available, and gives you the shareware converter which should transfer .avi to quicktime with the right codecs hanging around. i don't really use forty-two the app, so much as i use it as a way to save me time hunting around for the friggin' latest codecs on the 'net.

I'm more concerned about movie and TV files. I have the DIVX codec installed and more often than not AVI files have no sound or the playback is so jittery as to be unwatchable when using Quicktime.
Never had any of these problems with VLC and the only audio tracking problems I've encountered have been with MS Media Player.
if you can point me in the direction of an AVI wonder codec for Quicktime I'd be very grateful but in the meantime VLC is my movie player of choice.

Could it be because I like porn rather than cartoons? I have not a single AVI since the release of the DivX 5 QuickTime codec didn't play perfectly. The only disadvantage to the QuickTime player compared to VLC or MPlayer is that the opensource players allow clips to be assembled into playlists and played with minimal interruptions between them. With the QT player, of course, each clip must be started manually. I have no problems with any version of MPlayer. Having used several versions of VLC, none have been problem-free. As a DVD player, its audio was a disaster until I found a setting on the 'net that fixed it. As a clip player, there is a noticeable delay between the start of the video and the start of the audio. The audio in VLC is silent for a second or more, whereas it starts simultaneously with the video in both MPlayer and the QuickTime player. I feel almost as though I am living in the Bizarro world. I find so many VLC fanboys on the 'net. Yet on my machine, I have Windows Media Player, Real Player, iTunes, QuickTime player, MPlayer, and VLC. Of these, VLC is far and away the worst audio player.

I suppose Arthur C. Clarkes Mysterious World, Fog of War, Doctor Who, Angels in America and The Making of Tetris do have pornographic qualities. None of them playing correctly under Quicktime with the Divx plug in being one of them.

yea but in Mplayer when you hold down the forward key it fast forwords ... the forward key in quicktime advances frame by frame and if you hold it down it just repeats at the same rate as your keyboard repeat rate which is even slower than realtime

been sing it for years on various Mac and never had issues with it.
also, been using it all the time in Tiger and never had any problems others are talking about...

you can also install the XViD plugin for QT.
