Your "avi" is probably a dvix variant, and you would need to find a QuickTime codec to use it thus.
Notice that there are a lot of mutually incompatible dvix variants, and programs like MPlayer and VLC are simply bundles of these degenerate codecs with a little glue to hold them together.
Get the divx codec plugin from divx.com, works flawlessly with qt 6 and 7, 'tis sweet and free
yea but in Mplayer when you hold down the forward key it fast forwords ... the forward key in quicktime advances frame by frame and if you hold it down it just repeats at the same rate as your keyboard repeat rate which is even slower than realtime
Click and drag the progress indicator. It moves the video as fast as you want. You can return the video to just about anywhere you want. What more do you want?

Ok, done that and my file is playing back nicely with audio now.
Two problems remain though. No full screen option that I can figure out. Help tells me to get Quicktime Pro.
Also how do I activate the subtitles which are in the folder as a seperate .srt file? Using VLC it's just a question of selecting them and the movie file together through the options.

you don't need PRO for full-screen. try this script and save it in your script folder in your user library.
tell application "QuickTime Player" to present movie 1
