stops loans to friends? I dont think so: average conversation amungst some college students (for the sake of example, I will use a situation in which this would be legal)

"oh, ok, heres my copy, just use the key I found on WAREZ and run this executable before connection to the network..."

Just another reason to switch to linux, Apple is selling their soul for the sake of iTms, MS has been in the **AAs hip pocket since WM9S came out, and Intel is being dragged kicking and screaming into this. As for AMD, I have seen no reports of them DRMing, and if they don't, that could be HUGE for them...

Also: Consumers are not totaly stupid If the new device is less usefull than the old one, then why upgrade, and if it is less usefull, wouldnt that be a _down_ grade?

No. Apple is making a name for itself as the fiercest defender of intellectual property and copyright law in the technology business. It has already resulted in what some people are calling a revolution in the music industry (and it looks like podcasts might save radio), and it will make the MPAA much more amenable when Apple wants to sell movies in h.264 through some new-fangled iSomething and have them broadcast around the house via some kind of Airport Express like thingamabob.

Yeah, and the executable sometimes doesn't work. Speaking from experience, I've seen some WinXP installs become unbootable after a few windows updates. WinXP "calls home" all the time, and MS does look for the widely known cracks and cd keys. Besides, in the above scenario, that person can install XP from an OEM disk and use the CDkey found on the MS-label stuck to the bottom of his notebook. I've done that before, too, and it activates just peachy.

Nope, AMD has to do it, too. They call their version of the DRM hardware something different than that of Intel's. However, both perform the same functions. FYI, AMD is launching 3 new sockets in 2006 to replace their current lineup. One of the reasons is to support DDR2, but I bet DRM will be ready by then, too.

True, but PCs don't last forever. Eventually people will have to replace their machines. Also keep in mind that DRM won't be widely advertised on new systems. I think most people won't find out until they get the machine home and plug it in.
