meh...at least they don't try to make it "cool" by adding all that crap that a lot of manufacturers add, which just ends up looking bad (to me at least...I like my stuff simple). IBM's are def. business machines and the Apple of the PC world.
I run a VPR Matrix Notebook. With the proper maintinence of the OS (an admitted pain in the ass) it performs very good. I wish it had USB 2.0 ports, but other than that, it is an awesome notebook. Plus, the Porsche design is teutonic in its clean layout.
I don't think I would go without SP2. It includes a large amount of security fixes. Besides, it's not even my machine to manipulate. I merely set up it's wireless interface.
I have been a professional Windows software developer for more than a decade and a hobbyist developer for almost 25 years. I am a core developer for a software company that produces Windows software in use by most Fortune 500 companies, gov't agencies, etc. Does that count for anything?
Now, what's your qualification?
Your personal opinion does not constitute fact. Given that millions of Windows XP users have installed SP2 and have no problems, why should I believe an anonymous poster on AI that SP2 should be avoided like "like black plauge (sic)"?
The computer is designed in Austria by the guy who designed the body for the original 911. The assembly, as you correctly pointed out, is somewhere in the pacific rim (kind of like a certain small computer company from Cupertino, California).
The case is Magnesium and the black part beneath the keyboard, while still plastic, feels more like a warm metal and is glass smooth even after two years (unsure of the specific polymer). The keyboard itself is made of a smoky semi-transparent plastic that partially reveals the mechanicals of the keyboard underneath.
Its a simple and elegant design that reminds me of an Audi interior.
I know that I can get all of those patches without SP2, but that's a major pain. Also, MS has a habit of offering updates for machines with the latest service pack installed. It's hard enough for them to stay in front of vulnerabilities, so I would prefer to be using the same OS that they are trying to patch. I don't like their security center app, so I simply disable it using the services manager. Otherwise, I don't see any visible differences, short of the wireless network manager.

Sure, if you tell us the software. Anybody can claim to be a Windows developer for a decade and work for the company X...
I have 30 years experience in janitorial science and a Ph. D. in hamburgerology. Did my thesis on Big Mac vs. Whopper.
And here I'm talking about high technology among the giants of the modern computer age! Silly me!

Banality if you ask me.

Do you have any data to back that up?

Hmm... don't complain about slow connection then. You know, if you don't connect to network at all, you'll be 100% safe and you don't need SP2 or any security fixes at all!

I assure you that you can get ALL the updates on the machine with SP1 as well. Don't believe, call MS!

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
That's like a guy who designed a toilet paper dispenser desiding that he is so cool that he goes ahead and designs a space shuttle!
At least I said why I prefer SP2. Your only advice is to avoid it like the plague. Anyway, I said it earlier: "To each his own." You use SP1, I'll use SP2. Fair enough?

When I boot up the XP (SP2) machine in the house, connecting to that network takes closer to 15-30 seconds.
The reason for slowdown there is SP2. Avoid SP2 like black plauge!

Better advice would be not to take advice from skatman about issues he knows nothing about.

You avoid using Safari's spellcheck like the black 'plauge' as well, I see.

What's Porsche design?
The notebooks look to be made by the same sweatshop as for HPQ.
