...how important is iPhoto to you?
I was wondering, how important you guys think iPhoto is going to be in the near future?
Do you agree that iPhoto is a killer app way beyond anything Apple has offered in a long time?
And lastly, if you are familiar with desktop publishing, you know you need a 'high-end' photo to make a good printout (300dpi is a fundamental) - how is Apple/Kodak/Other going to advertise to the users of iPhoto to get a really good camera?
Thanx.

I'll download it tomorrow and find out... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />
[QB]Not at all. My wife loves the digital camera but has no want to print a photo album. Knowing her she'd rather print out her own little one and bind it herself. But that's her.
What do you think of the prices provided by Mr. Jobs to get regular print-outs? How expensive is to regular photography?
now my onbly problem is that I don't have a printer that works in OS X
Anyone know if there will eventually be plugins for scanners?
<strong>It's really neat IMHO. Saves lots of work for me, organizing, deleting, fixing red eye (now if only they could fix green eye..) Also, I LOVE keywords! So much better than trying to creatively name them. And exporting, and the way you can order photos.. and the slideshow! And "rolls," and even just the interface where you can zoom in on pictures, edit keywords with the literal click of a button, etc. I'm so going to order some of those big posters for just $20. 300DPI or not, they'll make great gifts. It's not the most important thing in the world.. but I'll use it almost as much as iTunes. I can't wait for v2 either. Thanks Apple </strong><hr></blockquote>
...organizing is giant leap forward compared to other similar archiving products- especially if you have a copy of Extensis' Portfolio 4. This feature is the most wonderful.
Scott, you are aware that you can print your own photos and bind your own photo album with iPhoto, yes?
<strong>It's missing some simple color correction stuff (like brightness/contrast -- basic stuff) but otherwise it's just what the doctor ordered.
</strong><hr></blockquote>
...you are absolutely 100% correct!
You get to wonder what other 'corrective' tools (like the Clamp/Clone in Photoshop/ImageReady) is Apple going to have in store for us in the future?
My parent have a digital camera and once they learn it not only will the being able to print and catalog now they can upload to iTools and make their web page without any work. They don't know how to log into iTools and then edit their web pages by uploading pics that have to be in their pictures directory. But this one click web page upload is perfect for them.
I think iPhoto is awesome. My wife is very eager to get her new iMac, DL iphoto, catalog her pics and design a book of pictures of our daughter to have printed for $30! (although being a free DL she might not wait to do it on the new iMac, LOL)
But, not just for photos! Being a graphic design student, I can forsee using iPhoto to keep track of my clipping pile (a random assortment of interesting images that all good graphic designers should amass), as well as copies of my past work for the sake of my portfolio and web site, clip art (not that I use it that much, blech...), quickly print up contact sheets for projects, and so much more!
I've been playing with the software alot since i downloaded it, and the options really seem limitless. You can literally drag and drop any image, in any format, into your library and do whatever you want with it. I could even put together a portfolio "book" of my work and have multiple copies printed for $30 a piece, or have Apple print my next 20" by 30" poster project!
Granted, this isn't exactly going to replace photoshop, but the organizational features alone are astounding and I'm really quite impressed with the software.
I am slightly dissapointed that Apple didn't come out with a matching digital camera though, I'm in the market for a new one, and Apple's would probably be a no brainer, I guess I have to start sifting through my mac catalogues again.. *sigh*
anywho, I don't know why so many people are complaining, I really think this Macworld rocked! Maybe just a notch below the hype, but still way up there, I'd say even more exciting than last year's SF keynote, titanium and all.
yeah, yeah, I know, no powermacs... Chill out! Do you seriously think Apple is going to leave them alone for much longer after putting a frieking 800mhz G4 in their "consumer" desktop? I think not, just sit tight...
ciao,
michael

...about cameras, Sony have excellent cameras for a budget .
...I agree with you when it comes to people compalining about the show - I don't care much about the new iMac, but it was iPhoto that brought the biggest punch! iPhoto without doubt is going to be huge!

ack, I just plain don't like sony's cameras, i'm thinking more like an olympus or nikon, I want something with an SLR viewfinder in addition to the lcd, and being able to use standard lenses would be nice... any suggestions for less than $1000?
ciao,
michael
Our marketing department won't let us use digital cameras for anything except the web and plain printing. Anything like a brochure they want scanned photos of at least 300 dpi.
I gotta believe that if you send off digital pictures of anything less, you will be disappointed in your $30 book.
I will use it mainly for its ease of publishing web pics for our family. Otherwise, I will store my pictures in folders of my choosing so I can find them more rapidly.

Firstly, that's why iPhoto has a low rez warning that appears on any photo it deems unprintable at a decent rez
Secondly, the photos are reduced to fit the format of the book. Most cameras today take pretty big photos, my Olympus takes 22"x13" or something outrageous. iPhoto reducing them and they should print nicely. If not, we'll know in a few weeks when the first books are printed.
(my wife is almost finished with hers, lol)

Edit: Okay, Apple released some AppleScripts that do just that. How nice!

I printed an album last night of some film images that Wolf camera saved to Kodak Picture CD. The sharpness wasn't that great, and I'm not sure if that's because the Picture CD images are not sharp of if iPhoto downsampled the images. Does anyone know? I'll try out my digital camera photos tonight, then I'll know for sure.
I think this is a great app--albeit slow. I stayed up until 1AM adding all of my digital photography (3 years worth) to it. It made a chore (archiving/printing photos) so easy that I'll have printed every photo I've wanted to print to an album for the past two years, this week.
<strong>Hell, who needs to order an Album for 30 bucks? That's why I bought a decent printer.
</strong><hr></blockquote>
I think that the book option is intended more to be given as gifts, not for one's personal use.
In fact, I've made a book for my friends already, and am ready to order, but I was just wondering if anyone knows what company actually does the printing/assembly. I also wonder how much of a cut Apple will get. I can imagine that by next Christmas, this'll be a big 'seller'.
