Could Apples switch to Intel make it possible for Sony to sell Macs?

The reasion Mac OS works so well is because its designed to run on Apple hardware by apple, if they start to licence it, there is a chance Mac OS could end up like windows

If I could run Mac OS X would run as well as Windows does on my homebuilt PC desktop, I'd be happy.

my guess is that OS X will run on any given IBM platform. Just not as well as on an Apple designed box. You can buy the OS but there will be NO support for it. That way you get the taste. But the graphics card you selected may give you problems. Or the soundcard.

On an Apple box you will get support and a guarantee of 100% compatability.

Apple gets your money either way.

If you are a haXor you will port it over anyway. That isn't the market.

Well that would be a neat trick.

Apple's current market cap is hovering around the $39 billion mark, whilst Sony is stuck at around $34 billion. Apple has been consistently moving away from Sony in valuation terms ever since the end of the last quarter.

Not only that, but Sony's balance sheet isn't even better than Apple's: so it's not like their share price is unfairly valued.

In reality, any Sony takeover of Apple would have to be highly leveraged - i.e. paid for with borrowed money - so all they have to do is find a bank who is willing to lead a syndicate of debt finance to the tune of $60 billion. Because once Sony says its interested, the price will go up as speculators dive in - apart from the fact that it would take until January, by which time Apple will have reported two more quarters.

And then, Sony will be holding around $50 billion of debt (having used Apple's balance sheet to immediately make some inroads) to take control of a company that should, travelling downhill with a following wind, make $2 billion in profit in FY2006.

Sounds like a plan to me
