Not really - they said a cheap computer was coming out, but the size caught them completely off guard. Like I said, The don't predict anything anymore than what everyone is expecting anyway.

With iPod-savvy Windows users clearly in its sights, Apple is expected to announce a bare bones, G4-based iMac without a display at Macworld Expo on January 11 that will retail for $499, highly reliable sources have confirmed to Think Secret.
The new Mac, code-named Q88, will be part of the iMac family and is expected to sport a PowerPC G4 processor at a speed around 1.25GHz. The new Mac is said to be incredibly small and will be housed in a flat enclosure with a height similar to the 1.73 inches of Apple's Xserve. Its size benefits will include the ability to stand the Mac on its side or put it below a display or monitor.
Along with lowering costs by forgoing a display (Apple's entry-level eMac sells for $799 with a built-in 17-inch CRT display), the so-called "headless" iMac will allow Apple's target audience -- Windows users looking for a cheap, second PC -- to keep their current peripherals or decide on their own what to pair with the system, be it a high-priced LCD display or an inexpensive display. Sources expect the device to feature both DVI and VGA connectivity, although whether this will be provided through dual ports or through a single DVI port with a VGA adapter remains to be seen.
The new Mac is expected to have a Combo drive only, but will possibly have an upgrade path to a SuperDrive at a higher price. It is unclear how big the hard drive capacity will be, although sources indicate it will be between 40GB and 80GB.
Other expected features of the iMac include:
* 256MB of RAM
* USB 2.0
* FireWire 400
* 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet
* 56K V.92 modem
* AirPort Extreme support
Looks pretty on the money to me! A bit off on what it would exactly look like, but they got the "incredily small" part correct.
Yea, but what macs? No PMs today, so unless they roll them quietly we have no idea what the time table is. If they come out in January, then intel PMs may be a year off. If we get them now, they may come in June.
I'm about ready to update, so this is important to me. Do I wait for first gen intel or get the last real mac?
I stand corrected - I guess we can mark down Dec. 28th 2004 as their last correct hardware rumor. Even though it wasn't until 2 weeks before the product was revealed.

Sorry to pour salt, but they also got the last Powermac update in April right on, when all the rest of the lemmings were clamoring about dual-core.
Yes it been difficult to take SJ statement of "great Power PC products still coming" seriously. However, lets look at the facts; Teh Steve said at the press conf that Intel Mac's would be out by June next year. The powermacs/powerbooks cant possibly continue as they are till then so there WILL be updates, probably before January. The 7448 G4 and dual-core G5 do exist so they are almost certainly going to be used, and if they were ready Apple would be using them now, simple as that. So we must be patient, as hard as that is. I'm sure Apple would have liked to get a Powerbook upgrade done for the Back-to-school buying period, that fact that they didnt probably means they couldn't. I'm willing to be that somewhere in China are thousands of new Powermacs and Powerbooks, ready to roll except for the processor.......

I wouldn't be so certain. Remember the aluminum 15" powerbook that took almost a year to show up? There've been other times too... \

yeah, I havent forgotten I was foolishly hoping those times would be behind us now but it looks like the Curse of Moto/IBM has struck again. I can see why SJ will be so happy to be free of them

I think this is what will happen, although not so quietly.
He did not say, but today he made clear in Paris that there will be no Intel Macintosh before June 2006.

Supplemental question: why would they bother?

I just can't believe another huge conference and no announcements of new products and "REAL" updates for Powermacs and PowerBooks.
Very sad.
Too much emphasis on the ipod. They forgot about their professional computer line ups. Come on! this must be a joke.
